My best friend in sixth grade had that song on tape. Not the Geddy Lee version though. Listened to it a lot.

Me and a friend went as Bob and Doug for Halloween one year in college. I got a lot of compliments on my Doug impression since I stayed in character the whole night.

Today's profile is on a band that is legendary in Canada, but couldn't sell out a Dairy Queen anywhere else: The Tragically Hip

Image

Back in the 90's, these guys epitomized Canada to a lot of people. "They're so great! AMAZING! I can't believe those stupid Americans don't appreciate how fantastic they are!" With a lot of people I knew, if you didn't like The Hip, you WEREN'T CANADIAN. It was pretty grating, tbh, and I didn't particularly care for them. The nonsense went on seemingly forever, and I remember at one point, Big Canada's attempt to force these guys on you led to Dan Akroyd bribing Lorne to get these guys on SNL. . Nonetheless, they would tour Canada seemingly nonstop, selling out arenas and headlining big outdoor festivals. They've released 13 albums, and 9 of them have gone #1 in Canada. Two others went to #2 and another went to #3. Never broke the top 100 in the States.

Anyways, over the years, as people stopped trying to force these guys on me, I grew to appreciate some of their catalogue. I'd never go past their greatest hits or anything, but they have some good stuff! ctz may enjoy some, but probably not. Ball, don't bother. Wolf, give it a shot! Anyways, as IMS broke the news to SOTSG recently, the lead singer has recently been diagnosed with terminal (I think) brain cancer, and the band is currently making one last tour across Canada before he kicks the bucket. People on Canadian Facebook and Canadian Twitter are losing their shit for the first few shows, and are getting all emotional and shit. The last show of the tour is being broadcast live on network TV in Canada, so everyone can mourn together.

Anyway, here are a few of their (in my opinion) best songs. Enjoy. :ourhomeandnativeland: :ourhomeandnativeland: :ourhomeandnativeland: :beav: :beav: :beav:

PS: I will never like July 27th. It will always be the day Reggie died. I just hate this day. True Celtic fans know what I mean.

I never knew how records were made until the Killer Dwarfs released this video in the late 80's.

Good breakdown bix. I think i had some friends, the real music goons, that would look down on us for going to DMB concerts, that were Hip fans. I have heard that New Orleans song. It's a shame about that lead singer. I think they were just starting to break through in the states.

When I was driving back from Ottawa to Boston in November 1992 I heard a catchy little ditty on a French Canadian radio station. I wish I could find it again. Unfortunately I have had trouble locating it trying to search for the lyrics since I almost certainly mis-remember them. Can anyone recommend a good website for early 1990's French Canadian alternative music so I can do further research?
