Reggae, its not just Bob Marley

Reggae, its not just Bob Marley

Postby chrisco » 15 Feb 2008, 02:27

Reggae when done well is good, but a lot of it is crap. Having a hard time getting past Bob Marley? Here are ten good reggae songs that don't have any Marleys in them:

Ali Baba - John Holt
Things in Life - Dennis Brown
Pickney Gal - Desmond Dekker
Apprentice Dentist - Lone Ranger
Johnny Too Bad - Jimmy Cliff
Night Nurse - Gregory Isaacs
Wanna Be Loved - Buju Banton
Murder She Wrote - Chaka Demus and Pliers
96 Degrees in the Shade - Third World
Pressure Drop - Toots and the Maytals

Anyone else want to list some great reggae songs that don't include a Marley? I could always use some recommendations.

Nice. I have a fair amount of Desmond Dekker, Toots & The Maytals and Buju Banton in my collection. I'm also a big Peter Tosh fan.

I especially recommend anything by Desmond Dekker. "Honour Your Mother and Father", "Unity", "Israelites", "Mother Pepper". He rules.

Tosh is all right, to me, in small small miniscule tiny so small shrink-rayed ant-like earl boykins doses. And when stoned.

I maintain: Reggae, it is just Bob Marley.

Meh, maybe - although Redemption Song, 3 little birds, and jammin' would have something to say about that (thank you Wikipedia). I just don't like reggae, but I like Marley's sound; so to me, Reggae is just Bob Marley. If you had mentioned Legalize It, I might've changed my tune - ha, puns are bad. I never really liked Tosh's sound is all. Anyway, just my opinion, just as shitty as anyone else's opinion.

thats fine. he is flat out wrong about this one. jimmy cliff, aswad, inner circle, sly dubar, lee "scratch" perry.. shit. this makes me quesiton the validity of his opinions on music period. if he wants to swallow bob marleys commercial stuff up whole, then he can remain ignorant to some great stuff out there.

just check out the soundtrack to "the harder they fall" daymn.

Question my opinion on reggae all you want, that's cool; I'm pretty much a Know Nothing on the subject, never claimed otherwise, so meh.

Now, if you wanna have a debate about the impact of Buddy Holly and Robert Johnson and Woody Guthrie on modern rock, I'm game.
