Sons of Kid Charlemagne: The Steely Dan Thread

Postby mister bacon » 19 Nov 2007, 12:51

it's time. it took me a long time to discover this band, but now that i have started listening i am hooked. i started with the greatest hits album and have now purchased Gaucho (fitting given the themes in the record and the fact that i am about to turn 30).

which is the next one i should buy?

i also figure this is a place where we can discuss the meaning of Steely Dan's dark, sarcastic lyrics.

the first song i would like to discuss is the song Babylon Sisters.

i mean, that song is such a marvelous way to open a record, with the thick melodic baseline. just awesome.

..but, what the hell is the song about? i have heard a couple different interpretations, one that it's about an older guy hooking up with a young naive chick.. the other about Los Angeles and San Francisco being the "Babylon Sisters" who "shake it" because they are susceptible to earthquakes.

so.. thoughts? opinions?

A Steely Dan thread? FUCK YEAH! The Prez's favorite band evah...

I have every album they ever produced (including the Becker and Fagan solo stuff) then had to re-buy all the CD's, and now have downloaded almost every song in MP3 format.

I'll have to listen to Babylon Sisters again to be able to comment on the lyrics. My favorites would go something like this, but I love them all:

1. Can't Buy a Thrill
2. Countdown to Ecstasy
3. Pretzel Logic
4. Aja
5. Katie Lied
6. The Royal Scam
7. Gaucho

ETA: Here's the lyrics to Babylon Sisters:

BABYLON SISTERS

Drive west on Sunset
To the sea
Turn that jungle music down
Just until we're out of town
This is no one night stand
It's a real occasion
Close your eyes and you'll be there
It's everything they say
The end of a perfect day
Distant lights from across the bay
Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
So fine so young
Tell me I'm the only one

Here come those Santa Ana winds again

We'll jog with show folk on the sand
Drink kirschwasser from a shell
San Francisco show and tell
Well I should know by now
That it's just a spasm
Like a Sunday in T.J.
That it's cheap but it's not free
That I'm not what I used to be
And that love's not a game for three

Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
So fine so young
Tell me I'm the only one

My friends say no don't go
For that cotton candy
Son you're playing with fire
The kid will live and learn
As he watches his bridges burn
From the point of no return

Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
So fine so young
Tell me I'm the only one

Just kidding, Prez.

Once upon a time, I HATED Steely Dan. As time goes by, though, and with the assurance from Mrs. Fletch that they knew they were being cheesy and awful when they made the music, I have come to appreciate them.

Don't really know the names of any of their songs or albums, but I know 'em when I hear 'em. Favorite song is that "get back, Jack, do it again..." one that ends with my favorite lyric of theirs: "In the land of milk and honey, you must put them on the table."

Yeah, maybe a little over the top reply, but I got a little excited to see a thread in the music forum that I could relate to (except D'Anny boy's classic rock thread)

All you kids with your newfangled music confuse me.

You can start a Johnny Rivers or Simon & Garfunkel thread if you want.

Reelin' In the Years is a favorite of mine. Gotta love the Dan.

Also, if you haven't, check out the Yacht Rock videos Bacon posted a while back, especially Episode 10.
I'd like to see a pair of boobs that would prompt me to write home. Maybe Scarlett Johannson level quality? "Dear Mom and Dad, I saw an awesome rack today. They were perfect. Everything else is fine. Love, BD79."

I can honestly say I know no Steely Dan songs to hear them. All I know about them is that the AD at my high school was also named Walter Becker, which I found quite funny.

if im cooking frozen pizza in the oven, how long should i preheat it. box says preheat to 375F but for how long?

Apr 25
the opportunity cost of knowing how to preheat an oven is pretty puny compared to anything else

Damn this thread. I couldn't get to sleep last night, so I got on the net and read a few threads here. When I tried to go back to sleep, I just alid there in bed with Deacon Blues, Hey 19, Do It Again, etc. stuck in my head for like an hour. Damn Steely Dan and their catchy hooks.

For the sake of accuracy, my above favorites are albums not songs.
