FREEBIRD! Classic Rock Talk

Postby D'Annunzio » 13 Nov 2007, 08:44

After all seeing all of the threads on here dedicated to really bad music, I thought there should be one on here for real shit. Debate the greatest bands of all time, discuss Van Halen vs. Van Hagar, Bob Segar vs. anti-Bob Segar, etc.

To start off, I'll run down my top 5 bands of all time:

1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
4. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
5t. Pink Floyd
5t. The Who
5t. Lynyrd Skynyrd

Wouldn't it have been easier to just add three more bands and make it a Top Ten list in no particular order, but in order because that's how most lists are done?

I'll add my list later but the first thing that comes to mind regarding your list is that you seem older than 30. Most of the bands you listed are right in my wheelhouse and were popular during my formative years.

I'm very old school when it comes to music. In fact, I don't think there has been a single good band to come around since the mid eighties.

I'm not sure if I can do an all-time list... my mood changes day to day...

Favorite Classic Rock?
The Doors
The Who

Favorite Early 'Punk' Rock:
The Ramones
The Clash

Favorite 90s band:
Weezer

Favorite Current Bands:
Flaming Lips
Polyphonic Spree
Against Me!

I can't say I like the Rolling Stones as much as I once did, as their current music brings down their overall quality. I like Classic Rock, but it gets old... I like listening to new music on occassion. The Ramones are just good fun, The Clash is awesome. Weezer's Blue Album is probably my favorite CD of all time. Pinkerton is simply great. The rest of their CDs are Ok, but not exactly what I'm looking for anymore.

The Flaming Lips are consistently good, and have been around for a long time. They put on the best live show I've ever seen, and it makes their music that much better.

The Polyphonic Spree are an experience to see live. They are simply amazing. It's not a traditional concert or show, but it's mindblowing.

Against Me!'s newest CD is incredible. It is one of the few CDs I have listened to on repeat in my entire life.

To say there are no good bands nowadays is simply admitting that you aren't interested in new music. The problem with classic rock is that you can't go to the live shows, which I consider to be a major part of the experience.

Cover bands are great and all, and I went to a Led Zeppelin cover band that was incredible (my friend actually thought it was them, but he was shrooming, so it's OK), but it's not the real thing.

I think music is best experienced live, and classic rock doesn't give you that chance (and yes, I've seen the Rolling Stones live... it's not the same. They were good, but not great)

My favorite bands are a little more recent than yours D?Annunzio, still, I completely agree with the statement above. =D>

I was brought up on Classic Rock. My dad and I shot pool in our basement every night, and we'd listen to WCKG (for those of you around Chicago, you'll remember this being the premier classic rock station in the early-mid 90's). I like a lot of modern music now, but classic rock is my favorite.

The Doors
The Who
The Beatles
Fleetwood Mac
Steely Dan
Supertramp
Jethro Tull

Those are my favorites.

I think you and I have discussed Classic Rock before, my rugged brother. We had a very detailed discussion about the lyrics to "Peg" by Steely Dan.

My favorite "classic rock" bands, in no order:

The Beatles
Led Zep
Floyd
Credence
The Doors
the many iterations of Clapton
Bob Dylan

I know, not all that groundbreaking.

Artists/bands I could give or take on any given day:

Stones
Bruce
Van Halen
Fleetwood Mac
Rush
the Dead

Solid, though unspectacular:

Petty
Eagles
Skynyrd

Liking more and more as the years go by:

Steely Dan
Velvet Underground
Allman Brothers
Iggy Pop

And I agree with Theny that it's retarded to say that there hasn't been a single good band to come out in the last 20-25 years.

Lynrd Skynyrd fucking suck. They are victims of the Nirvana syndrome where the lead singer dies and the band immediately becomes remembered for being better then they actually were (except Nirvana are good). I like Tom Petty but he doesn't belong anywhere near a Top 10 list of classic rock.
My top 10 list of classic rock groups or solo acts in no particular order:
Bob Dylan
Led Zeppelin
early Black Sabbath
Motorhead
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Clash
The Pixies (they are for all intensive purposes a nostalgia act in 2007)
James Brown
Clapton before his country phase of the 70s
