PS: I will never like July 27th. It will always be the day Reggie died. I just hate this day. True Celtic fans know what I mean.

Sturgill Simpson.

His new album comes out on April 15th. But NPR is streaming it this week.

I loved the last album. This one seems to be great too.

Going to travel to Kansas City to see #tpt against the Royals the first weekend of May.

Things that I should do/see/eat while in Kansas City?

I have seen the Indians play the Royals twice in KC. It has been a while, but Arthur Bryant's was the best BBQ I have ever had. Go to the one in the sketchier part of town, it is supposedly better.

Jack Stack and/or Gates for BBQ. The WWI museum is awesome and will jibe well with your playthrough of Battlefield 1. Negro Leauges Museum. Boulevard Brewery if you're into beer at all, they make great beer but it's all pretty...accessible I guess? It's all easy to drink. They've got a big Union Station there but it's kind of meh. The Power & Light District is their touristy area downtown.

Oh, the WWI museum is a sure bet, great suggestion.

Also, I did a college paper on Negro League baseball so I would be sure to enjoy that as well.

I'll certainly be hitting up some BBQ places! Thanks to both of you guys. Sincerely.

bix, you have axed me for a top 5 kendrick lamar list. kendrick, who has put out six albums, changes his sound on every album he does. all of them are excellent and so what i am going to do is pick a song you probably would like from five of those albums. the song is representative of what his sound was like on each album and then after listening you can pursue more songs from around the time period he made the song.

without further adieu i present, king kendrick: a top 5 for bix

section 80: A.D.H.D.

the beats from this era, back when he was trying to come up are very spacey and thoughtful. it is fitting that there's a iced out piece with bud on the cover art. this song is representative of the cosmic jazz sound he pursued when he broke thru to the mainstream

good kid mad city: The Art of Peer Pressure

this is a concept album about a guy trying to ride from one side of compton to another to get some pussy. the whole album sounds more spacey and less jazzish than section 80. it also established kendrick's talent for storytelling. good shit.

to pimp a butterfly: For Free

this album, in contrast to GKMC, is much more free jazz. sotsg-famous jazz bassist thundercat produced and wrote a lot of the backing jazz tracks and beats on this album. it one a ton of grammies and shouldve won album of the year imo. the theme of this album is an exploration of america's uhhh... complicated... history with black people. kendrick was a spoken word kid who used to go to do slam poetry readings. this song is him at his slam poetry best. the video is the bees knees!

untitled unmastered: untitled number 7

this album/ep is a bunch of outtakes from to pimp a butterfly. kendrick and top dawg let lebron listen to them and then lebron tweeted about it telling him he had to release em because they were too good. they release it and the free flowing freestyles and experiments unearthed some classics. this track is like the only one i can find on youtube from this album and it's a great representative of the weirdness of this shit. it's a masterpiece. fun fact, this song is a diss of big sean, drake, and jay electronica.

damn: element

the theme of this album is him airing out all of his anxieties and fears. much of it is focused aggression and honestly. i would be very surprised if this doesn't win hip hop album of the year. i mean, the hook is gentle and perfect and he's talking about slapping niggas and making it look good. simply wonderful.

about two years ago. this man declared himself the king of rap on "both coasts". at the time people scoffed, but since he threw down the gauntlet no one's had a better run. future and thugger are the only ones close to seeing him right now.

BONUS BEATS

kendrick has shown up in a big way on features in the last five years too. here are a few good ones.

scHoolboy Q - that part remix

vince staples - yeah right

this album is absolutely fucking fire and i endorse you listening to it or any other vince staples album

mike will made it - perfect pints

fun fact: kendrick shouts out my old neighborhood in south central in his verse. suck it ball!
