One and Done

Postby Iron Mike Sharpe » 13 Jul 2007, 13:55

Apologies if this topic already exists. I perused the thread titles and didn't see anything of the sort, but I didn't actually read the threads (sue me).

What are your favourite songs by bands that are only known for one song. They don't have to be "hits" as defined by Billboard or anything. Just songs by bands, where besides relatives of the band members, people could only name one song they did.

"In A Big Country" Big Country
"In the Summertime" Mungo Jerry
"Children of the Sun" Billy Thorpe

I was going to add "Ah! Leah!" by Donnie Iris, but I guess he also had "Love Is Like a Rock"

I heard "Take on Me" by A-Ha on my way into work today I would think it qualifies for this category. Also there is no better way to get dirty looks from people when you are pumping a song like that in traffic.

"Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners has gotta be the king of this category.

Here's the list from VH-1's Top 100 One-Hit Wonders:

http://home.ix.netcom.com/~speaker7/lis ... onders.htm

Lots of disco in the middle of the list... the majority of that genre's hits were one-hit wonders because even though the were usually written and produced by the same clique of people, they were performed by different "artists."

Another good one that's not on that list: "Song 2" by Blur.

Yup. I am going to stay away from the really popular ones.

I forgot to add to my list, a song I heard earlier this week:

"Tell Me What You Want" Zebra -- it was a minor hard rock hit in 1983. I can't remember them having any other songs I ever heard

I disagree that they were a one hit wonder. "Girls & Boys" was a pretty big hit.

Underscore is going to be mighty pissed with this threa :sniff:

A-Ha, at least in Brazil, where they are huge, are not considered one hit wonders. Hunting High and Low, The Sun Always Shine on TV, and others are big hits over here.

I second in a Big Contry (great song by what I consider a truly one hit wonder band)

I Melt with You - Modern English
Relax - FGTH
Major Tom - Peter Schilling
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo and Never Ending Story - Limahl (Kajagoogoo?s singer)
Tarzan Boy - Baltimora
The Promise - When in Rome
The Great Commandment - Camouflage
Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
Clan of Xymox - A Moscoviet Mosquito
I Like Chopin - Gazebo

Come on Eileen, good call theny. Gonna check that VH1 List

Yeah, Blur's actually a pretty good band. That song is an aberration.

a couple more

China Crisis - Wishful Thinking
B-Movie - Nowhere Girl

Putting Spandau Ballet on that VH1 list is a fucking joke. They even have plenty of Spandau?s videos on the classic shows.
Twisted Sister is defintely not a one hit wonder. Soft Cell has at least 4 huge hits in europe too, besides Tainted Love.

Not sure how mainstream these songs were, but they were big on the college scene:

"Hobo Humpin' Slobo" Whale
"Cannonball" The Breeders

Are you talking about her work with The Pixies? I guess I seperated the two as different acts.

I can't remember anything else The Breeders did off the top of my head.

No, you're right, but it's against the law to smear the good name of any of the Pixies.

I think a couple of the Breeders also were in Throwing Muses, who had a good song or two. I just count those side projects of hers as waiting for Frank Black to come back.
