Under the Influence - The Best and Worst Covers

Under the Influence - The Best and Worst Covers

Postby Fletch » 09 Mar 2007, 00:39

Saw a couple posts in the SB about cover songs and thought there would be a thread in here already, but no.

Anyway, what are your favorite/least favorite (best/worst) covers?

Some favorites:

Fiona Apple's version of "Across the Universe." Just awesome.
Chili Peppers covering Stevie's "Higher Ground."
Social D covering "Ring of Fire."
Johnny Cash covering "Hurt."
Cake covering "I Will Survive."
Cowboy Junkies covering "Sweet Jane."

Some shitty ones:

Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman" (not that I love the Guess Who's version all that much, but Lenny's was not only brutal, but overplayed TO DEATH).
Clapton's "I Shot the Sherriff" (god love Clapton, but that's a terrible cover).
The Ataris doing "Boys of Summer."
Disturbed covering "Shout."

I have a ton more on the "favorite" side (including just about any cover that G'n'R did), but in the interest of brevity and balance, I'll stop.

(I'm thinking true covers, not just samples, by the way.)

Johnny Cash is killer on covers. My favourites of his are probably Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down"

Other awesome ones:

Cake - I Will Survive
The Feelies - What Goes On (Velvet Underground)
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
Mike Ness - Don't Think Twice, It's Alright (Bob Dylan)
Sublime - We're Only Gonna Die For Our Own Arrogance (Bad Religion)
Lyle Lovett - Smile (I think Nina Simone)
Supersuckers - Hey Ya (Outkast)
Presidents of the USA - Kick Out The Jams (MC5)
William Shatner - Common People (Pulp)
Headstones - Tweeter And The Monkey Man (Travelling Wilburys)
Willie Nelson - Bridge Over Troubled Water (S & G)

ETA:

one of the worst ever:

Sheryl Crow - D'yer Mak'er (Zeppelin)

I fucking love that cover. It's tremendous, which I never thought I'd say about ANY William Shatner song. (Helps that the original is a great song...).

Iron Maiden doing Jethro Tull?s Cross Eyed Mary and Nektar?s King of Twilight are amazing. Maiden does some extremely good covers on their b-sides. Those two are my favorites. Anyone heard Anthrax?s version of Got the Time? You just can?t stay seated for that one. There?s also a solo Bruce Dickinson recording of Scorpions?s The Zoo. Very, very nice.

I mentioned this before here, it was on the David Bowie thread, I love Bauhaus version of Ziggy Stardust. I also happen to love Tainted Love by Soft Cell, which is a cover of some 60?s black music artist I think. On Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack there?s a great version of Can't Help Falling In Love, by some obscure band called Lick The Tins (plays right before credit rolls). They turned it in some sort of a folk song with a military beat and, a kids voice and then some sort of a flute. Great times. There?s many others, but I just don?t recall them now.

Actually, we did have one...

ETA: One I will add is Soft Cell's "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?" I'd listen to that version of "Where Did Our Love Go" 100 times before I'd listen to the Supremes version

The Bosstones covered What's At Stake (Slapshot) and Enter Sandman (Metallica). I thought those were pretty cool.

A lot of the other ones I like were already listed.

ETA: I forgot Husking Bee's cover of I Got A Feeling. They used it in the Beck anime. It's really good.

One of my favorite Nirvana songs. Have it on the Nirvana greatest hits album.

One of the few times I thought a cover was better than the original is The Sea and Cake's cover of Bowie's "Sound and Vision".

Agreed on "Man Who Sold the World" as well, Cobain did a great job with that.

Pearl Jam's cover of "Last Kiss" is about 1000000x better than the original.
