Random Thoughts - TV Edition

Since the random thoughts threads have so much volume I figured we could use one for TV. For example if _ wants to rant about how network tv blows ocelots he now has a place to do so on-topic without creating a thread called "IFC".

For my money, no sitcom sidekick comes close to Barney Fife.

(Damn it, someone has to get this started)

How do you define sidekick? I'd put George Costanza over Barney Fife if you'd classify Costanza as a "sidekick".

George Costanza, Gob Bluth, and Norm and Cliff from Cheers would be my pantheon of sitcom sidekicks.

Little Buddy himself - Gilligan. He's the patron saint of TV Sidekicks.

He'd be up there for me except I don't think he technically qualifies. Since the show is named after him I'd have to call him a "main character". A sidekick has to be clearly relegated to secondary status. Fife was clearly behind Andy Griffith. Costanza was clearly behind Seinfeld. Gob was clearly behind Michael. However I wouldn't say Gilligan was clearly behind the Skipper (mmmheh). That's the same type of rationale that keeps me from nominating, say..., Eric Cartman. I think he's just as major as any other character on South Park and therefore can't be called a "sidekick" to Kenny or Stan.

I'm not sure I'd consider Gob to be Michael's sidekick; I find him to be more of a nemesis.

If anything, Lindsay (and to a lesser extent, Maeby) is the sidekick on AD.

I guess I'm loosely equating "sidekick" with "supporting character".

Good point. I agree.

In that case, I say the Boy Wonder himself, the Gary to Batman's Ace.

I just came across a website that had a list of the top ten rated TV shows from ten years ago. Here they are:

The Cosby Show
A Different World
Cheers
The Golden Girls
Growing Pains
Who's the Boss?
Night Court
60 Minutes
Murder, She Wrote
(tie) ALF
(tie) The Wonder Years

I cannot believe The Golden Girls was the 4th highest rated TV program for an entire year. What is the mass appeal of a bunch of sexually active senior citizen women? Also funny that 9 out of the top 11 shows then were sitcoms.
I think now the top ten is like:
Idol
Idol
over-the-top medical drama
over-the-top medical drama
Currently in vogue Game Show
CSI: Somewhere
CSI: Somewhere else
Generic Reality Show Involving People Getting Voted Off
Slutty Housewives
Two and a Half Men
