Dunk's Official Anime Thread

Dunk's latest and greatest anime -- Welcome to the NHK.

It's about a shut-in (hikikomori) that has a bad experience and won't leave his house for four years. A cute girl shows up one day outside his apartment and tries to 'rescue' him.

It's pretty freakin' bizarre and very adult. Satou thinks it's all great conspiracy by the NHK (Japan's public television network) to ruin his life 'cause they have such cute anime girls that it distracts young men and makes them have unrealistic expectations. The show is full of anime in-jokes, lolicon stuff (young girl porn), drugs, hallucinations, sex, and commentary on Japanese society. I can't really do it justice. :)

I think I just made everyone not want to watch it now.

Of course, man. Back in the late 90's when I picked it up I made regular trips to NYC to pick up fansub VHS tapes (like the one I sent you). Putting shit up over BitTorrent wasn't invented yet so that was the option at the time. It's available on DVD now in the US, at least.

In addition to the 51 episodes, there was also a couple of OVA (one of which has Tsukushi as a broadway dancer in NYC - which explains the opening theme). There was also at least one live action remake of the series as well which should be on the 'nets.

It's one of my favorite shows although it does get a bit repititve towards the end culminating in introducing a new character like Oliver in the Brady Bunch to basically rehash the plot again but differently...

Further upping my geekitude, I actually own an original production cel from the 3rd episode. Right after Tsukushi gets a drink thrown in her face at the bar in the Roppongi, she puts her hand up to her head and looks angry. Right....THEN!!

When I was looking for info on those shows when you sent the original list I stumbled on some pics from the live action remakes. I may have to google some of those again.

Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim was one of my favorite shows ever...

It was the story of bounty hunters chasing after various criminals for a variety of reasons, and the soundtrack was all jazz music.

I think there were 25ish episodes, and a movie. I need to buy it on DVD, but if you get the chance, I recommend checking it out.

It's not the "Best" anime or anything, but it's a good way to kill 30 minutes.

Liked that show a lot until the last episode, which pissed me off almost as much as the Heroes finale. It din't help that the wife messed with the timer nd I had to wait about 4 weeks to see the last two episodes. Good music in Bebop as well.

I actually missed the last episode... I haven't seen all of them, and need to go back and watch it all.

The music is excellent, though.

Cowboy Bebop was excellent. It had a great mix of action, comedy, and memorable characters. I enjoyed the ending myself.

Yoko Kanno was the music director. She's pretty well known in the industry and has done a number of high profile shows including Macross and Ghost In The Shell.

I recently watched Sayonara Zenbutsuo Sensei (Goodbye, Mr. Despair). I'm not sure what to think. The premise is that a teacher is depressed and wants to kill himself. His weird students help him out but completely unintentionally. It's a comedy for the most part. I think.

Bringing this thread back.

Dunk's favorite anime that is available on Hulu.

Naruto

Naruto Shippuden. Sequel to the above where the characters are aged three years. It's this generation's Dragonball but with ninja.
http://www.hulu.com/naruto-shippuden?c= ... d-Cartoons

Death Note. About a guy who can control demons via a notebook. A mystery/thriller.
http://www.hulu.com/death-note?c=Animation-and-Cartoons

Hikaru no Go. About a kid that gets possessed by a ghost and they learn to play Go (japanese chess, kinda) together.
http://www.hulu.com/hikaru-no-go?c=Anim ... d-Cartoons

X. Two forces that battles for the fate of the world.
http://www.hulu.com/x?c=Animation-and-Cartoons

Slam Dunk. The definitive basketball anime/manga. I specifically ask for #10 on my softball teams because of this anime.

Nana. Two chicks that are become best friends that lead totally different lives. An anime soap opera.

Now and Then, Here and There. About a kid dragged into the post-apocalyptic future. Really depressing, off-putting character designs.

Since I keep rejecting Bix to do assignments in the God thread, I'm updating my anime thread. :)

It hasn't taken off like Wampa's Star Wars ( :sniff: ) but there is always hope. :beatsme:

Highlights from this winter season

Chihayafuru

Ben-To

I couldn't find a good clip from Bakuman Season 2 so you're on your own there.

I know zero about anime, but I saw this article and wondered if this development would have any real impact on the anime fans here.
