Dunk's Official Anime Thread

Postby Dunking Donut » 13 Nov 2006, 11:30

Because of popular demand, I'm starting SoTSG's official anime thread. For those not in the know, anime is defined as Japanese animation. The main appeal is that it covers a wide variety of subjects and genres unlike it's American counterparts which are kids shows and comedy.

To kick it off, I'm listing my top 10 TV series of all time.

1) Kimagure Orange Road (Whimsical Orange Road). One of the classics (circa 1987) love triangle stories of all time. Indecisive boy can't make up his mind between two cute girls. The kicker -- he has psychic powers. Spawned two movies as well as a half dozen OVA's (Original Video Animation aka direct-to-video).

2) Hana Yori Dango (Boys Before Flowers). Another love triangle. Tskushi Makino gets caught up with the rich boys that run Eitoku high school. Drama then romance ensue. Has a sort of controversial ending as the anime caught up to the manga (comic) before it was over. The live action show was popular.

3) BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Koyuki is a pretty uncool kid who hooks up with some guys and they form a band. This show really captured the awkwardness of high school particularly well.

4) Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, aka SaiKano (She, The Ultimate Weapon). Set in the near future, Shuji finds out his new girlfriend, Chise, is a government experiment to develop the human body into a weapon. Surprisingly realistic in terms of emotion, it's one of the most depressing shows ever. Seriously. There isn't one comic moment in the whole damn thing.

5) Kareshi Kanojo No Jijyou aka KareKano (His and Her Circumstances). Another high school relationship drama. Yukino and Arima pretend to be perfect and then find each other and their true selves. Had the potential to be the definitive relationship show but famed direct Hideaki Anno left halfway through and the budget was gone. The second half is marred by three recap episodes and an episode done with cutouts on popsicle sticks. Really.

6) Naruto. Currently airing on the Cartoon Network with some edits. Naruto seeks to become the top ninja in his village to win the respect of his peers. The large supporting cast really makes this updated Dragonball work.

7) Great Teacher Onizuka aka GTO. Onizuka Eikichi takes a vow to reform the Japanese educationals system and become the world's greatest teacher. His unorthodox methods transform his troubled class. The live action version of this show was one of the highest rated in Japanese TV history.

8) Nana. Currently airing on Japanese TV, this relationship show is about two different girls named Nana and there respective quests to find love and happiness. Episode 29 was just released on the Internets this week.

9) To Heart. Based on a dating sim game, it shows Hiroyuki and his interaction with about 8 or 9 girls. Captures the typical day of ordinary Japanese students but answers questions like 'what matters more, love or friendship?'. I never played the game.

10) X. Based on the super popular manga by CLAMP, two opposing forces oppose each other for the future of Earth. One wants to wipe it out and start again; the other to save it faults and all.

There you have it. Hey, it wasn't Dooze and his thread about the Tigers, right? :)

Tune in over the next couple weeks to find out Dunk's favorite anime movies of all time! But mostly, thanks for stopping by!

Dunk, I think I mentioned it before, there?s a channel here called Animax, and it?s 24 hour straight anime. I find the shows that are not on primetime pretty boring, but the ones that are (about 1 hour a night I think) are kind of cool. I?ve seen bits and pieces of something called Gatz, where this big black ball has control of some people who may or not be dead, they have to perform some duties for the ball, weird stuff. I like it because there?s usually some sex involved and it?s pretty dramatic. Another one I keep watching because of the lesbian action is Steel Angel Kurumi, but the story is silly. Saikamo it?s on primetime, I?ve seen it a couple of times, but I haven?t followed the story much to realize how depressing it is. I may check it out more carefully next time.

I take it there?s a difference between animes, and pure japanimation, like Mazinger, Saint Seya, etc, or I am wrong?

Edited to correct anime name. You?re right Dunk, it?s Gantz. BaromOne come after or before Gantz.

Wampa, the anime with the black ball you're referring to is Gantz (or at least that the Japanese title). It is an insanely violent show.

Mazinger and Saint Seiya are Japanese. Something in the Japanese style that isn't Japanese isn't anime (IMO). Teen Titans and Avatar, for example, are heavily influenced by anime but are American.

Theny, I think anime porn is pretty lame. I've never watched much myself. I'm usually looking for a great story. Often, the Japanese perspective makes it pretty interesting because they're stories can be pretty unconvential. A lot of American stuff, in general, is pretty formulaic.

Maybe to a huge anime fan like yourself it's overrated, but to a casual watcher of anime, Dragonball Z is awesome. All those crazy powerballs, the cool looking hair, and funny names. . . . . .good shit.

Netflix actually has a decent anime section in terms of movies and a few box sets to rent. For buying stuff, I like the Right Stuf

http://www.rightstuf.com/main.shtml

Check out their closeout and bargain bin sections. I picked up my KareKano boxed set for $40 (that's $8 a disc plus the box). Right now the best deals are Card Captor Sakura Box Set, Chobits Box Set, Midori No Hibi Box Set, and Record of Lodoss War Box Set.

An honorable mention for my top series of all time:

KoiKaze. One of the most controversial series of all time. A man, 30, falls in love with his younger sister, 14. Realistically portrayed and handled delicately, it leaves you squirming and feeling sympathetic yet disgusted. Nothing graphic is shown -- the real emotion is how the characters handle their self loathing and the love that keeps them going. This is a show when I got done watching I had to talk to someone about it. I had a real "WTF did I just see?!" moment. If you're looking for something that makes you think and brings out emotion, this is the show. It's all kinds of fucked up but in a great way.

Jeffrey won season 3 of Project Runway basing his last collection at Olympus Fashion Week on Japanese Anime. I personally think Uli had the best final collection, and Michael had the best designs throughout the season.

i am reviving this thread just to throw out there that if you want a great anime show to get you "started" that i would recommend fullmetal alchemist.

you can find it on adult swim monday through thursday. great characters, interesting plot. good stuff.

avoid, however, the show that comes after it. InuYahsa is the worst tv show ive ever seen in my entire life. an action anime written by a woman, and you can tell. half the time the characters are discussing how much the pine for each other or saying INUYASHA! KAGOME! its fucking lame.

Thanks for reviving my thread guys! I'm here with more anime action, this time for your listening pleasure. With that, I give you my top opening theme songs.

1. Naruto - "Haruka Kanata" (Go The Distance) by Asian Kung Fu Generation. So good they kept it in place for the current American version airing on Toonami.

http://www.emp3world.com/mp3/93172/Naru ... a%20Kanata

2. Beck - "Hit In The USA" by the Beat Crusaders. It's in English so that helps it in the standings, IMO. Is not on the Beck Soundtrack double album, IIRC, and that is disappoint (and yes, I have it).

http://www.tc.umn.edu/~anime/media.shtml

3. GTO - "Drivers High" by L'Arc En Ciel.
I found the actual Japanese music video. it's the band driving an old caddy through Vegas drinking champagne and smoking. I don't get it either!

4. Nana - "Rose" by Anna

5. KareKano - "Tenshi No Yubikiri" (Angel's Pledge) by Fukuda Mai

6. Kodomo No Omocha - "Ju-kyu Jiko News" (7:00 News) by Tokio

7. Fushigi Yuugi TV - "Houshi No Tame Ni" (For My Darling) by Akemi Satou

8. X TV - "eX Dream" by Myuji

While there are a few others I like, this is all I have time for today. But mostly, thanks for stopping by!
