Late Night TV

Postby Brick Tamland » 04 Oct 2006, 23:06

I generally enjoy Conan much more than Leno or Letterman. But when Letterman signed his contract extension a couple weeks back, it got me thinking about when Leno steps down and Conan takes over in a couple years... with Dave sticking around, he's going to KILL Conan. As much as I like a lot of the quirky crap Conan does, I just can't see that working for the Tonight Show audience. They're gonna lose every viewer over the age of 40, and CBS is gonna clean up.

That's when Arsenio makes his comeback and cleans up on the new CW channel or whatever the hell it's called nowadays.

Dave is just hanging around so he can keep going when Leno's done. And hey, he can do whatever he wants, since he should've had the Tonight Show job.

Not to mention every midwest viewer who finds Leno "safe".

Leno still leaving in '09

They're trying to get him to do a new deal with NBC from some prime-time specials or something, if for no other reason than to keep him from going to Fox.

I'm still amazed that Leno gets the ratings he does.

But I guess if I stop and think about it, I shouldn't be amazed. I mean look at the business Wal-Mart and McDs do. There's just no accounting for bad taste.

Couldn't agree more. But, my Mom is a big Leno fan, so I think he appeals to the older quiet subdued crowd like my parents and their friends. I don't know too many people my age who watch Leno, but I don't know anyone my parents age who watches Letterman, Conan or Kimmel. Leno has to have a demographic of 50-90, no other way.

I'd like to know what the demos are for Jay Leno. I'd suspect he does terrible in the younger demos. Older people probably watch him in bunches because of the "Tonight Show" name out of habit, just like advertisers don't want to advertise to older folk because their spending habits are set in stone out of habit.
