Game Shows

Postby Briandong79 » 14 Mar 2006, 08:33

I can't find any thread celebrating the wonderful world of TV game shows anywhere on the board, and I also can't find an appropriate place for this story, so here goes:

Peter Tomarken, host of Press Your Luck, has died

Apparently he and his wife were flying a plane that crashed into Santa Monica Bay. Sad days, indeed.

I was a huge Peter Tomarken fan. I thought Wipeout was a great followup to Press Your Luck, but it didn't get the viewership it deserved. I won a couple things on Game Show Network right after the network's debut on call-in shows he hosted. Somewhere in my basement there's a videotape of me talking with Tomarken via phone while he was on-air in the GSN studios. He seemed like a really nice guy, and I'm not surprised that he was performing a humanitarian act while he died. R.I.P. Mr. Tomarken. Thanks for the memories.

Tomarken had to be a damn good guy...considering he was on a show with guys going "NOWHAMMYNOWHAMMYNOWWHAMMYNOWHAMMYSTOP!!!!" all the friggin time. Sad to see he died.

Yeah, I AIM'd that story around to my friends last night. Press Your Luck was simply an extremely entertaining show. I'm trying to think where I saw it pre Game Show channel... wasn't it on USA like waaay back in the day?

USA, and prior to that syndication, it was on our (SC) local cbs channel during the day.

I was taped in Television City in LA where they still tape the Price is Right. I think it aired from about 1983-1986 with four original seasons. There's a good web site about the show here for you young'uns who don't remember it.

Did anyone see the special on Game Show Network a few years ago about the guy who figured out the board's sequence and won something like $85,000? He timed it so he kept getting $5,000 and a spin and did it over and over. They interviewed the producers who couldn't do anything to stop him. It was by far the most interesting thing I have ever seen on GSN.

yeah, i have that on DVD. That guy was incredible, mostly because he figured out this whole "press your luck" game, but he couldn't hold a job/get a real scam together.

His name was Michael Larsen and he won over $120K. He made two timing errors in the pattern but didn't Whammy, so he managed to survive. They actually broke up his appearance over two shows since it took him so long to rack up the money. CBS consulted their lawyers before paying him, figuring they could call it "cheating". The lawyers told them they didn't have a leg to stand on, so Larsen got his money.

My love of game shows is unholy. This should probably go in "The Confessional", but I have a library of well over 300 game show episodes on videotape. I need to get those transferred to DVD one of these days.

I actually created this thread with the knowledge that it would accumulate a great number of posts due almost solely to FTT's participation.
