God damn remakes

Sick of putting this shit in the Upcoming Movies thread.

A remake of Point Break is being fast tracked.

What's a reasonable statute of limitations on this? 25 years? Maybe more?

if im cooking frozen pizza in the oven, how long should i preheat it. box says preheat to 375F but for how long?

Apr 25
the opportunity cost of knowing how to preheat an oven is pretty puny compared to anything else

I have no problem with them remaking bad movies that had good ideas but just didn't work for whatever reason. Point Break clearly doesn't fall in that category, and is exactly the opposite actually. It's a pretty dumb idea for a movie but is elevated by Swayze, Reeves, & Busey.

However, just scanning this list, it looks like 30 years is a decent rule of thumb:

I also have zero problem with remaking foreign films for American audiences.

Yeah, but you get movies like this:

I think I would have made Dunk the slight favorite to post this sentiment first, but Farva would have been a close 2nd

I don't mind foreign films, and I don't mind subtitles (do they really remake Brit films that often? I guess they remade State of Play or whatever, but that was a mini-series to a movie--they're much more apt to steal British TV shows), but from a practical matter, if I'm watching a movie, I'm generally giving it at most 90% of my attention, which doesn't bode well for subtitles, so if it's a well done remake, I have zero problem with it.

That thread also went off the rails pretty quickly. This thread is fine.

I'm into old movies and to make my work day even more even more productive, I like to watch old Siskel and Ebert shows on the internet. I can't find it now on youtube or http://siskelandebert.org/, but Siskel & Ebert did a whole show in the 70s complaining about how many remakes and sequels Hollywood was making then. Closest I could find was this little line from Siskel in 1976:

It definitely seems worse than ever, but remakes have been going on forever. Maltese Falcon was even a remake of a 1931 Pre-Code film, also as far as sequels a lot of B movies would have the same character undergoing multiple adventures like the Michael Shayne detective stories. The sequels I think really kicked in like crazy after Godfather II and/or Jaws 2 broke bank though iirc.
