this weekend, i saw this movie called Enter the Void. it's about a drug dealer who gets shot and killed in tokyo, and about what he experiences in the hours following his death. on the intensity scale, i'd rate it over taxi driver, and above requiem for a dream. this might be the most intense movie i've ever seen. not really scary, but there's some scenes in his movie i'll really never forget. the drug tripping scenes are REALLY well done. by far the most impressive i've ever seen in a movie. the visuals and other cinematography were tremendous. sound design was alright, but the accents of the english/america/french/japanese people speaking english to americans made me have to stop and rewind it more than a few times. i found it weirdly realistic for such a psychedelic movie. the conversations and camera work gave it a strong cinema verite feel. the main character could easily be many many dudes i knew when i was younger. ditto for his sister.

the biggest problem with this movie is its pacing. it is probably 30 mins longer than it needs to be to accommodate some of the visual sequences. on the plus side, a lot of those extra minutes give screentime to some fantastic titties, including paz de la huerta (so hot). if you're looking for a different experience for a movie, you should try this one. but it's really not for everyone. there's some shit in this movie i'll never fucking forget.

i'd recommend it for mtm, chrisco, and babylurch. maybe jitsu. that's it.

I saw Manchester By the Sea. It was quite good. I have not heard of probably 15 of those.

So I was thinking about this this morning, and I'm not sure this is the right thread for it but I don't feel like starting a new one for what may be a nonsense idea.

I was thinking about "perfect" movies. Not necessarily haunting or powerful or even necessarily my favorites, but just from a cast/story/pacing/visual standpoint, just the whole thing works. Story moves along briskly, doesn't waste time, all of the characters are well acted and have a point (with one big exception discussed below), usually needs some strong funny parts even if the movie itself isn't a comedy. In thinking about it on the drive into work, I think my list at this point has 2 definites:

Out of Sight with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, both are great, great supporting cast in Ving Rhames, Steve Zahn and Albert Brooks, movie doesn't drag at all, entertaining plot, Jennifer Lopez might be the most attractive person who has ever existed on Earth in that movie, etc etc.

Fargo--Again, the entire cast is perfect, William H Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, etc, etc. Great story, moves along, visually a pretty typical Coen Brothers flick.

Then I have 3 that I think are on my list but am not entirely sure:

Back to the Future
> These two I worry are more nostalgia picks. I feel like BttF is a better pick than Raiders, but they're both real close for me.
Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Social Network--this one would be on my list except my criteria runs into Justin Timberlake. I think he's pretty bad in the movie, but his restaurant scene is pretty key, and him flinching away from Zuckerberg at the end is pretty funny. I think I'd put them on.

Here I must strenuously disagree as Raiders of the Lost Ark may be the perfect movie (screw you Chariots of Fire!)

the first movie i thought of to meet this criteria was Raiders, the next one was Jaws. The way i watch Goodfellas it fits (turn it off when Henry and Karen have that fight in the visitor's area). Otherwise there is a slight* pacing issue.
