requiem is good, but it sucks to sit through. you know how you feel when you watch a porno? now picture the complete opposite of that. there you have, requiem.

Fletch,

Recommend me something to put on my Netflix. I got Fast and Furious, Taken, and Waltz with Bashir coming soon and then pretty much nothing after that. I flew 60 hours a month ago and watched just about every recent release on the plane so I got bupkis.

Hmmm...tough to start with an essentially blank slate. Far as I can tell, you share my excellent taste in movies, and judging from those three flicks like a diverse slate, which is good, but makes this more difficult. I need to set a baseline.

From the following groups, you must choose 1 film that you can save - the rest will burn in hellfire. Please note any that you haven't seen. And remember, this is for posterity so be honest.

Group 1
The Manchurian Candidate (original)
Bloodsport
Spies Like Us

Group 2
Donnie Darko
Rocky
Road House

Group 3
Finding Nemo
Saw
Ghostbusters

Group 4
Caddyshack
Total Recall
Almost Famous

Group 5
Big Trouble in Little China
The Godfather
Rocky IV

Group 6
Point Break
Raiders of the Lost Ark
True Romance

Group 7
White Chicks
Starship Troopers
Rain Man

This may not help me at all, but it might be fun anyway, so just bear with me.

the opportunity cost of knowing how to preheat an oven is pretty puny compared to anything else

Ok. I've attempted to process your answers to come up with the following:

Spies Like Us - what the hell's wrong with you? Of course, you need not put this on Netflix as it's on TV every other week.
Man on Wire - great doc from last year.
Roman de Gare - solid French murder mystery
Tell No One - if you like Roman, then this one. Otherwise avoid; I think it's the lesser of the two, but still pretty good.
Persepolis - would make for a great double feature with Bashir. Or a really depressing one.
Synecdoche, New York - just in case this slipped by your radar. Kinda frustrating, but probably works better on DVD. I only seen it in the theater.

Going back to some older but perhaps not seen flicks:

Ronin - another just in case
Paris, je t'aime - anthology of short films centering on Paris. Hit and miss, but more hits. Many great directors involved.
Breach and Fracture - two of the better suspense movies of the last few years.
Shattered Glass - good drama about liar liar journalist Stephen Glass. Features the only good performance I've seen from Hayden Christensen. Really.
Out of Sight - just in case

How am I doing? Warm? Cold? Seen all of 'em?

Bold I will toss in the queue. Italics I seen. Thanks.

Fracture was good? I might give that a go.

It's no award winner, but for what it is, I really enjoy it. I've re-watched it a number of times on HBO. It's like A Time To Kill, only with a better lead actor, a hotter chick, no racial tension, a better villain, and no Oliver Platt. Other than that, it's the same movie, just without Kevin Spacey and the KKK and Kiefer.

But serially, it's a well-made legal/murder/suspense flick. And watching Gosling hold his own with Hopkins is worth it regardless.

Porno recommends, full movie on YouTube edition...

The Day of the Jackal

If you can't enjoy this flick, you have a giant dump in your pants.

For you 'Wire' goons, it's referenced in this strong scene here:

The Killing

One of Kubrick's earliest and most straight-forward movies. A young Sgt. McCloskey from The Godfather and a few other doods get together to rob a race track.

Stay tuned for more YouTube recommendations, as I'm sure these will be a big hit :!: :!: :!:

I read Day of the Jackal a while back, and enjoyed it. Actually read several books by that author and they were all good. I'll peep that one at some point this week, and report back on the size of the dump in my pants.
