Westerns

Postby Bricks » 09 Oct 2008, 15:39

The board is dead today and I couldn't find an existing thread on the topic, SO...

I love Westerns, plan on seeing Appaloosa this weekend. Is anyone else a fan? What are some favorites?

Robert Duvall turns out his share of good westerns.

Open Range
Unforgiven
Broken Trail (a made for TV one with the dude from Wings)

The only Robert Altman movie I ever really liked was a western...McCabe and Mrs Miller.

Clint obviously pwns this genre.

Unforgiven is very good, I liked the update on 3:10 to Yuma, High Noon was good, both The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Outlaw Josey Wales are good flicks.

Tombstone. End of Sentence.

I'll be your Huckleberry.

Tell him I'm coming for him...and hell's coming with me!

Johnny Ringo: My fight's not with you, Holliday.
Doc Holliday: I beg to differ, sir. We started a game we never got to finish. "Play for Blood," remember?
Johnny Ringo: Oh that. I was just foolin' about.
Doc Holliday: I wasn't.

I hate Westerns...now. but Young Guns 2 was good.
PS: I will never like July 27th. It will always be the day Reggie died. I just hate this day. True Celtic fans know what I mean.

Love Tombstone, such a quotable movie. The exchange between Kurt Russell and Billy Bob Thornton in the beginning is epic.

"Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens!"

"Mr., I'm getting awfully tired of..."

"I'm getting tired of your gas! Jerk that pistol and go to work. I said throw down, boy! Are you going to do something or just stand there and bleed?"

like a couple old john ford ones (stagecoach, man who shot liberty valence). silverado was pretty good. thought unforgiven was decent but overrated. that one a couple years ago with sharon stone, gene hackman and dicaprio was a lot better than the trainwreck i expected. other than those not a big fan of the genre.

the sharon stone etc one was "the quick and the dead". i also thought it was okay. russel crowe was in it too.

"Open Range" was the last really well done American Western I've seen. The last good western I saw was an Australian one called "The Proposition". Very good film with Guy Pearce.

I thought Unforgiven absolutely warranted its Best Picture nod. Fantastic film.

open range was great, agree chrisco that broken trail was good. tombstone is way up there in my favorite movies in general. i thought the quick and the dead was pretty dumb...the scene where hackman gets killed and there's a bullet sized hole in his shadow...so bad. the man with no name trilogy is great, high noon, i'm forgetting one of my favorites and it's making me crazy, i'm trying to visualize my dvd collection...nope can't remember it.

and the best western of all time is blazing saddles.

I've got to see Unforgiven. I can't believe I haven't, since (lame name drop) a friend of mine is in it, playing (I believe) Clint Eastwood's son.

Good thread, I agree. Westerns rule.

1. Once Upon A Time in the West
2. The Searchers
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales
4. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
5. High Noon

Can't really go wrong with a Ford, Leone, or Eastwood western.

THE LONG RIDERS!! That's what my favorite (real) western is. it had the keach brother actors as the James brothers, the carradines as the younger brothers, the quaid brothers as the miller brothers, and the guest brothers as the Fords. Great fuckin movie.
