I pay quite a bit of attention to movies. I had never heard of Lion.

Mel Gibson is back!

There are probably more documentaries that I would want to see than the best picture nominees, or at least a higher percentage.

Team Zootopia for Best Animated Feature (probably the only category I'm qualified to give an opinion on at this point)

kubo tho

Yeah, first animated film to get a Visual Effects nom. I'd like to see it.

I think La La Land stops Hamilton guy from getting his EGOT this year.

Damn shame if you ask me.

My ranking for the Best Picture nominees...

1. Hell or High Water
2. Moonlight
3. Hacksaw Ridge
4. Lion
5. Hidden Figures
6. La La Land
7. Manchester By the Sea
8. Fences
9. Arrival

La La Land will win. Hollywood's second favorite thing is honoring movies about Hollywood. First favorite is yelling at Orange Man.

Is this the first year youve ever watched all the oscar nominated films?

I've seen zero of those films. Apparently, I don't have fun.

Same. I have no interest in La La Land or Manchester By the Sea. I don't know what Moonlight, Lion, or Arrival are about. The others look like they could be OK.

Me either but looking at the list together, to me it looks like a pretty good year. There isn't a movie on there that I wouldn't watch.

1. Hell or High Water

Likes: Quite an interesting story, very well-acted, great mix of drama, tension, comedy and action.

Dislikes: Not sure that I loved the ending, but it fit.

2. Moonlight

Likes: As detailed when I wrote about it in the Recently thread, one of the best character development movies that I've ever seen. They took a character (gay, black, in-trouble youth) who has nothing in common with my life and made me interested and empathetic with his life.

Dislikes: If you are uncomfortable with a gay scene, do not watch. Tough to recommend to others because if they cannot identify/empathize with the main character, they will hate the movie

3. Hacksaw Ridge

Likes: Very few directors stage a war scene like Mel Gibson. It's brutal to watch but really hammers home the point of how war is hell. Contrast that scenery against a guy who is willing to enter the battles with no weaponry whatsoever because of his beliefs and you've got yourself a great story. The firsthand testimonials at the end from the actual soldiers was the balls too.

Dislikes: Some of the scenes got a little long and, like most bios, the drama was ramped up a notch too much

4. Lion

Likes: The story is pretty fucking incredible. A guy finds his childhood home using Google Earth using nothing except landmarks he saw when he was young? True story, to boot.

Dislikes: Some of the drama around the Nicole Kidman character was not explained well enough to my liking. She came off a bit weirder that she probably should have.

5. Hidden Figures

Likes: Another true story that happened right here in Hampton Roads (cheap pop). Think Beautiful Min + 42 + Apollo 13. Couple of good chill scenes.

Dislikes: Fake, ramped up drama like a screming showdown about the location of the colored womens' bathroom followed by an overwrought public destruction of the sign. Heavy-handed and unnecessary.

6. La La Land

Likes: Really good love story, likeable leading characters (for the most part), seemless transition to musical numbers. Best-looking movie of the year, great cinematrography. Huge fan of the director who also made "Whiplash". Interesting take on lost love theme.

Dislikes: Musicals aren't really all that fun, but this works. Goslin's character is a bit much early on.

7. Manchester By the Sea

Likes: Really well-told story. Affleck is spectacular and one of the more underappreciated actors working right now. Story always moved into interesting directions and away from tired tropes.

Dislikes: Not a whole bunch of action or things happening and quite a depressing mood across the board.

8. Fences

Likes: Denzel is dat dude. The man could make eating a sandwich interesting (and not just for the condiments either). Viola Davis owns this Oscar race.

Dislikes: Way longer than it needed to be.

9. Arrival

Likes: Interesting take on how language is interpreted and how delicate communication can be.

Dislikes: Took me watching it two times to "get it". Still didn't buy into the story as much as I should have. Aliens were too weird.

Lots of good faces here. The Rock on the far right is definitely my favorite. He does the People's Eyebrow in real life!

ETA: What the fuck, it cut off The Rock.
