No, i'm pretty sure you were right. I wasn't certain where the precise setting was so i just took a general part of the area.

The Karate Kid takes place in the San Fernando Valley, affectionally referred to as "The Valley" by southern califonians.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with California, living in the Great North and all.

I'm watching it now on Mpix... does anyone else find it creepy that Macchio was 22-23 during the movie? (Zabka was still a teen though)

22 or 23 and still hadn't reached puberty. Still hasn't reached it and he's 40-something.

It's no more creepy than most of the other twenty somethings playing high schoolers in movies and TV. Wasn't Luke Perry like 52 during his last season on 90210?

I coulda sworn it was set in Bakersfield or Fresno or some other god-forsaken place like that.

The kids didn't seem like Valley kids to me.

Yeah, I could never get into the movie for that very reason. I mean, the rest of the movie was so spot-on in terms of accuracy and plausibility. But that one detail ruined it for me.

they could have been talking about "the central valley" which is where Fresno is located.

I think in the very beginning, Daniel asks his mom why they had to move to Fresno (or Bakersfield) from the east coast.

Then he pouts and says "I hate it here! And I hate you!!" and then goes off to sulk.

Luckily, he finds a lonely old man who wants to befriend a lonely outcast misfit teenage boy with supple young skin and well...the rest is history!

ETA: (courtesy imdb.com) Danny and his mom came from Newark.)

Apparently they are remaking it with Will Smith's 9 year old son...

Wonderful.

Is it really that hard to write a new movie? I mean, I realize you have to put in some effort, and stuff... but does every movie have to be remade?

Anything anyone is looking forward to the remake of?
