the opportunity cost of knowing how to preheat an oven is pretty puny compared to anything else

Since you seem to have had so much success with Tom Poti, why not go after another soft Rangers defenseman? How about Rozsival? Rozsival and a second rounder for Semin*, who says no?

* - this trade has most likely been seriously proposed by Rangers fans all over the web and has been picked up by some blogs as a legit rumor.

Despite his vaging out in the playoffs, I doubt Semin's going anywhere. If Lindstrom wants to pull a Raymond Borque and believe in one more year and sign with Washington, I'd be all for that. Wouldn't happen in a million years but the thought of dooze crying into his stevie Y jersey every night just makes me dream that much more.

I know Semin's likely staying in Washington. But it's a rule for Rangers fans that whenever you suggest a trade whose primary purpose is to get rid of a player who's underperforming (or who never could have lived up to the absurd contract he was given), it has to involve a first line player on a contender coming back.

Whenever a team goes out like this in the playoffs, the first reaction is "oh we need to get some physical stay-at-home defenders", when that's a lot easier said than done. Half the teams in the league would kill to get a legit second-pair blueliner who takes care of business in his own end.

I'd prefer them dumping Wade Redden.

I know you think Varlamov is a capable goalie, but if they go elsewhere, who would you like to see them go after?

Yeah, if someone offered Pronger or Niedemeyer or, for Ogi, Chara, just about any fucking defender that's semi-capable (defends, clears rebounds, makes decent outlet passes from the zone) I'd send Semin. The O is high-powered enough just shitty D and semi-shitty goal-tending which the shitty D doesn't help.

And as for Varly, I mean...he's capable but I don't trust him in the playoffs any more than Jose. Either can get hot enough to steal a game or two but neither will sustain it long enough to make a Cup run. Hell I wouldn't mind bringing Huet back if Chicago's gonna stick with Niemi (or if Chicago wishes to go back to Huet, we'll help 'em out and take Niemi). I haven't seen a list of impending goalie FA's which means a trade is probably in order. I got it. We'll send Semin to Buffalo and they'll send Ryan Miller and throw in someone like Tallinder. WHO SAYS NO?

ETA: just ran down a list of impending UFA's at goalie. If Nabokov wants to leave San Jose I'll welcome him with open arms (doubt he leaves). Just a random one that was there whom I know nothing about, Mike Brodeur of Ottawa is 27, went 3-0-0 with a 1.01 GAA, .964 save % and a shut out. It's only 3 games and I know nothing about this guy but hey, he's got a good last name and in the small sample size great numbers so fuck it, take a chance.

This is the point I was making. You just mentioned three of the best defenseman in the NHL. Everybody pretends that there's this bottomless well of capable defensive-minded blueliners, who are flying under the radar for some reason, and it's the teams fault for valuing offensive guys. If only we traded our disappointing superstar for a blue-collar hard hitting defenseman that "doesn't make a lot of headlines but gets the job done" we'd be fine. But when pressed for suggestions, they only have perennial Norris Trophy finalists who their teams would never trade. Unless, you know, their wife insists on moving to a city with better weather. If there were so many great shutdown d-men, then you'd be finding them in the draft.

It's the same thing in the NBA when people say, "oh all they need is a big man who plays good d and blocks

Yeah, there's usually a couple wingers who can put up 20-30 goals, 50-70 points in free agency but lockdown defensemen are fucking scarce. The ones usually available are the Brian Campbell types who are more in the Mike Green mold and are fine if your other defenders can...defend.

Snoop's hockey jersey trend catches on 17 years later in Washington DC. In fairness, this dude sounds like a faux black; hockey fan growing up in Gaithersburg and has a white fiancee. Still funny to me.

Tampa may have the Lightning but Washington brought the THUNDAH!

I'm still not used to this better defensive team that plays the low scoring affairs. But Ovi's picking it up of late (still 40 fewer points in only 5 fewer games this season than last... ) and they're looking like they could work their way back to the 1st or 2nd seed. 2 week road trip will be the deal breaker or maker starting next week.

Hey in 4 games with the Caps he's got a +/- of +4.

Besides, who better to block shots than a wide man? :corn: :corn: :corn:
