The Joke that is the New York Islanders

I dunno. They might have been better off just accepting that they're in a world of suck for the next four years, then hoped to have a lot more money to get better in 2011-2012. Now they have a little more ammo to help them now, but will still be handicapped by a not-insignificant-in-the-hockey-economy $2.2M per year from 2011-2015.

The thing is, for what they were paying Yashin, they can still get 3-4 decent to good players, so /I think they'll still come out ahead, even with the 2.2 mil hit.

I agree with Bigsby. This was a great move by the Isles. The Islanders had to make this move for a number of reasons. Keeping him and his salary wouldve hurt them a lot more. The Islanders made their big run last year while Yashin was injured. Yashin was being benched by Nolan in the playoffs. When he did play he was playing on the fourth line with the likes of Richard Park. Yashin does not fit the mold of the team under Nolan. I don't think the salary cap hit is that big of a deal. The salary cap is supposedly going to be $50M next year. The Islanders made a mistake by trading for Yashin and then signing him to a ridiculous contract. They traded Zdeno Chara and Jason Spezza for him and then signed him to a 10 year 87.5 million dollar contract. In addition, buying out Yashin increases the chances of re-signing Smyth. After what they gave up to get him, they have to sign him. The extra room also gives them a chance to go after another big name free agent, maybe Drury or Gomez.

How long of a contract do you think they'd offer Drury? 20 years? 24?

Hey BC it might be a good idea for you to start an Islanders blog. This looks cool.

Great for Hofstra, Horrible for Isles

I am interested to hear how this would work when a Hofstra basketball game comes up against an Isles game. Last I heard, the WRHU sports staff is up to 40 people now (10-15 when I was the assistant director there several years ago), so they have the numbers to pull this off. I would also imagine this would work just like football used to where it's 4-5 upperclassmen rotating as the color commentator/sideline.

Well, at least the Fox glowing puck is off the hook as the worst innovation in the history of hockey media.

I think signing with Sportschannel in 1991 (or whenever it was) and eschewing ESPN was probably the worst.

This Islanders owner seem like a nut job. The team has nearly wiped Pat LaFontaine from it's history:
