I should have given Federko an honourable mention too. He shook my hand once while I was camped out waiting for Aerosmith tickets.

Knowing what I do about pre-mid 1990s hockey, which is next to nothing, I'll give this a go, no goaltenders:

1. Gretzky
2. Maurice Richard
3. Lemeiux
4. Gordie Howe
5. Bobby Orr
6. Bobby Hull
7. Phil Esposito
8. Mike Bossy
9. Stan Mikita
10. Steve Yzerman

Goalies:

1. Patrick Roy
2. Dominic Hasek
3. Jacques Plante
4. Terry Sawchuk
5. Tony Esposito

How do you have #4 so low? He's either 1or 2 depending on who you ask.

Yeah, that's dumb of me. My knowledge of old school stuff is pretty limited. You can slot him in at 2 and just bump Rocket and Lemeiux down.

Thanks for leaving Brodeur off the top 5 goalie list. His hall of fame plaque should be a diagram of how to run a neutral zone trap.

I could have added Brodeur, but then I'd have to leave off either Terry Sawchuk or Tony Esposito, and both of those bitchin' masks deserve to be ranked. :D

As for Ovechkin compared to Bure and Mogilny, yes he is better. The former Red Army teammates have a combined 0 hart trophies, two fewer than Ovechkin has already. I think a better comparison among recent stars (in terms of production, not style) would be Jagr, who is top 10 all time in points while playing the vast majority of his career in the dead puck era. And don't give me the "he's a product of playing with Lemieux" crap, he led the league in scoring 5 times on his own. Like Jagr, Ovechkin was atop-3 offensive players the minute he stepped on the ice. He's not close to being in the top 10 all time he's well on pace.

Ten best hockey players I've ever seen (caveat: I started watching hockey in the mid-80s, quit watching in the late '90s and started watching again a couple of years ago):

1. Gretzky
2. Messier
3. Lemieux
4. Coffey
5. Scott Stevens
6. Ovechkin
7. Bourque
8. Gilmour
9. Hawerchuk
10. Lindros (if only he could have stayed healthy)

How did you watch hockey from the 80's to the 90's and never see Jagr?

I seen him. He was pretty skilled. Who would you replace in my list?

Anybody 8-10. Hawerchuk was an absolute beast in the 80's but when it comes down to it, Jagr did more in a lower-scoring era. Gilmour was a better playmaker, but Jagr's advantage as a scorer outweighs that IMO. And Lindros just didn't play long enough.

Also, Art Ross Trophies:
Gilmour 0
Hawerchuk 0
Lindros o
Jagr 5

A lot of people don't like Jagr (even in his home country) and I understand that. I know he wasn't the most motivated backchecker. But he was hands down the best offensive player of the last twenty years other than Gretzky and Lemieux. I know stats aren't everything, but his numbers are just too effin' good to keep him out of this list.

I approve of this thread choice. 43 years old, still playing in the nhl, bogarting slags from the Czech juniors team.

When he was in the Rangers, he briefly made a big show of being a team player by sharing an apartment with rookie Petr Prucha, who wildly exceeded expectations. Mid season, Jagr kicked him out so his model gf (pics below) could move in. Mind you, he didn't ditch him for a new apt, which as the highest paid player in the NHL at the time he easily could have done. Just told his 19 year old teammate and countryman to fuck off. His career never recovered.

As for the model gf, he later pretended he was going to marry her to keep the relationship going.
