Moving this from the Varitek thread in the Red Sox column...

We got Pietrangelo from the Penguins in 1992 for a 3rd and a 7th round draft pick. This was when E.J. was really jockeying for that eventual position in Pittsburgh and was giving them whatever they wanted.

There's actually a Frank Pietrangelo tribute web site. God bless the internet.

Sean Burke sat out for a year due to a contract dispute if I remember correctly, playing netminder for the Canadian olympic team in Albertville.

I hated EJ soooo much.

When EJ took the Pittsburgh job seemingly right after the Francis/Cullen trade, I think that's when I lost my sports innocence.

The Whale is dead.

It's not whether the Whale still plays hockey, but if we choose to believe in the Whale it will always live within all of us. Just like Santa Claus. In fact, I think The Polar Express would have been a much better movie if the kid was on a magic Zamboni to the North Pole to see Randy Ladoceur.

Although to be technically accurate, they would've needed to be Olympia brand ice resurfacing machines, not Zambonis...

The Whale will never die.

THey can take away our hockey team. Hell, they can take away hockey altogether.. But they'll never take our Whale. NEVER!

There's even a Peter Sidorkiewicz fan page in Polish. Proof that the Whale lives on. That and the 20 mint condition Kay Whitmore rookie cards I have in some box somewhere in my house. Remember when they were touting him as a future all-star goalie? Oops...

Ah! Kay Whitmore! Didn't we end up trading him to, like, Vancouver?

Rickey was always a big Daryl Reaugh (sp?) supporter. Rickey liked the big dude.

Yeah, we sent him to the Canucks for three pounds of Canadian bacon and future rights to Shania Twain, or something.

Between Reaugh (who once went five consecutive periods without allowing a goal, then let in something like four in five minutes after that) and Sean Burke the Whalers seemed to like 6'4" goalies. Maybe they wanted to make sure they could dominate the NHL intramural volleyball league.

Kind of funny that Mike Liut hasn't come up yet, getting mentioned only after Reaugh and Pietrangelo. I guess that's because he was traded for Yvon Corriveau before the Sega NHL games became popular, so I never controlled Sega Liut in a Whaler uniform.

I think I was at the game when Reaugh let in the 4 goals on 5 shots.

And who could ever forget Mike Liut? I loved that guy.

I could've watched Liut, Francis, and Dineen forever. I was so sad to see each of them go (unlike that prick Brendan Shanahan). Frankly I'm still bitter towards E.J. I'm good at carrying grudges.

Sadly, I didn't really get to enjoy all the glory days of The Whale. I've always been a Bruins fan and only moved to CT in '95, thus barely even getting to know the Whalers before they were snatched away from us. But they'll always have a place in my heart. The last game I went to (I think it was one of the last games, period) was when Primeau fought his brother. Good times.

I was at the last game when they played the Tampa Bay Lightning and blanked 'em 2-0. They broke out Brass Bonanza one last time at the beginning of the third period and the crowd went nuts. When the game was over I cried more than Derek Jeter after learning that ARod was dating Gary Sheffield.

Rickey was off at college during that last game... Very sad. Wish Rickey could've been there.

Rickey likes to play Brass Bonana after making out with The Rickey Gal, though.

Bo doesn't know if Rickey meant Bonanza... but "playing Brass Bonana" is funnier...

Moving a team from a great hockey town like Hartford to the hockey hotbed of Carolina(?!?) was one of the 10 leading causes of the NHL going directly to hell.
