the opportunity cost of knowing how to preheat an oven is pretty puny compared to anything else

Wow. Again I don't follow the NBA that closely but it seems like he's done a good job there, why the firing? A bid to keep Johnson by hiring someone he likes?

Woodson had been on thin ice there for years, but every year they actually improved. After the way they laid down against the Magic and embarrassed themselves against the Bucks he'd clearly lost the team.

I don't think Johnson has anything to do with it. I'd be shocked if they tried to resign him. They'll probably try to resign Childress from Greece and play either him or Marv Williams as the 6th man, with Crawford moving into Johnson's spot. This still leaves a serious question as to how they'll replace the rotting corpse of Mike Bibby at the point.

Ok, I figured the near-collapse in the 1st rd and the flame out against the Magic might have factored. Didn't realize he was on thin ice since, as you say, they had improved under him and, as the article said, made the playoffs 3 straight seasons.

Sign Nate Robinson. Atlanta <3's crazy-athletic chuckers with attitude problems.

Well, New Jersey will be looking to move Harris if they get Wall, but Atlanta's so thin that anybody they move just leaves another big hole.

$119 Million to Joe Johnson over six years?

I'm no big NBA fan (or capologist [/Simpson]) but is that a good idea?

Absolutely not. Common sense would be more than enough to tell anybody that, but the NBA stats nerds have been absolutely killing Atlanta.

Personally, I think they're straight up better if they let him walk, move Crawford to the starting 2 and upgrade the point.

While I agree in principle, how do they upgrade the 1 spot? Atlanta isn't exactly the number one free agent destination and they don't really have a lot of trade chips. Personally, I think they'd be much better off if they got Raymond Felton and let Johnson walk, but what's the likelihood of him wanting to play there?

You know what else they could have done to upgrade the point guard spot? Draft Chris Paul. Man, this team would be scary if they had a point guard half that good.

Yup, but if they can't upgrade the point, I think they're better to bite the bullet and let JJ walk. Why do you have to be the ones to pay that salary?

Agreed on Felton. I'd rather overpay for him a bit than overpay a lot, for a long time, for JJ. Not sure what other options they'd have.

I agree with you in general on Johnson, but I think you can play a little devil's advocate here. You also have to figure that Josh Smith might get all cunty and demand a trade if the team regresses significantly next year. They can afford in the long term to lose Johnson but not Smith. I think even now he's a more important player and he doesn't strike me as the type of guy who has the patience to understand or accept moves that will hurt them in the short term.

I still dont see the issue. Its the NBA, it stinks. Someones gonna pay the guy, may as well be them. He will keep them competitive probably and help with ticket sales and such. And such. They let him walk, how are they gonna get better anyway. No top guy would ever sign there, and unless they luck out in the draft and get a Lebron James or Derrick Rose...they are screwed anyway. YES I KNOW THEY PASSED ON CHRIS PAUL and DERON WILLIAMS.
PS: I will never like July 27th. It will always be the day Reggie died. I just hate this day. True Celtic fans know what I mean.

The problem with that deal is that Atlanta is absolutely determined not to go into the luxury tax. The new JJ deal puts them right against it. So it means that they won't sign anyone with the MLE for years to come. It also meant that they actually went against their GM in who to hire as a HC in anticipation of this. And I wouldn't be surprised if they shopped some of their younger pieces around pretty hard.

They would have been much better off if they sign and traded JJ for a couple of young pieces, resigned Childress and someone with the MLE, and decided to really go young.

The reason I feel they didn't is because they are still trying to fight the notion that they aren't serious about winning, and even if letting JJ walk would be better long term they are afraid of a backlash like when Wilkins was traded in 94 and the few fans they had gave up on the team.

Ok, so Im Atlanta today listening to a sports show on their local sporting news station. The latest rumors are that the hawks are trying to trade Josh Smith and dump the salary of Marvin Williams so they can pick up a few players, with the priority being to sign Shaq to the MLE...

If this is true (a big if, given how shitty sports reporting in anything other than college football is in the south), then this franchise is more pathetic than I thought.
