The Umpire thread

I follow one of Alabama's players mother on the Twitters, and apparently the ump told the catcher she didn't touch home. That ain't cool, right?

That is correct.
I suppose the rules regarding appeal could be different in college softball, but I doubt it.

ETA: I just re-watched the video. It didn't look like the umpire tipped off the pitcher but who knows what he said. Also a coach pushed her (made contact) back toward the plate and told her to re-touch. That's interference and an out anyways if the umpire saw it.
Ballz: So, I fucking got a BJ for $250 total, and wore a rubber. It sucked, I couldnt even feel it, so i jeckyled onto her tits. She was cute. Not even that far out of my league, it was a waste of $250

The softball video posted has created tons of commentary and discussion in the umpire world. Mostly regarding the live ball vs. dead ball appeal which is boring to anyone but an umpire. People found that the NCAA softball rules are ambiguous and conflicting in areas regarding this.

Bottom line, she should have been able to go back and touch home plate UNTIL she entered the dugout, but as I mentioned she was physically "assisted" by a coach and that's interference. The umpire got the call correct (out) but for the wrong reason (appeal, instead of interference).

agree that interference was the way to call it.

whether it was right or wrong under the rules, the idea that the ump flips a new ball to the catcher and she then uses it to tag the runner out just didn't seem like it should be possible. and even if the appeal was possible, shouldn't the catcher have just been able to step on the plate, even if it wasn't a force?

that was what i thought at first, that for the appeal to take place the ball has to be put back in play, then the pitcher step off and they appeal. so he blew the tag out but as you said should have dinged her for the interference.

thanks, prez!

A similar play happened in the CT baseball class L state finals a few years ago on a walkoff hit. The potential winning run was celebrating and missed home plate, then was called out on appeal and the team lost later in the game. It was quite the clusterfuck at the time.

I was watching!
The umpires fucked up, that was clearly interference, intent has no bearing on the call.
Since the blundered call did not lead to any runs by the Yankees, MLB will not uphold the protest and this will just go away.

Good talk, I gotta go. I'm tired.
