Isn't he a front office/personnel guy? Does he actually have anything to do with game plans and play-calling and stuff?

This is from a New York Times article Saturday...

Coughlin and Marrone have a long history that centers on Syracuse, where they each played and coached. Nearly 20 years younger than his boss, Marrone sees Coughlin as a mentor, not a threat. He shares his game plans with Coughlin, who attends practices and will pull players aside to deliver instruction.

Commenting on Coughlin after the regular-season finale, Marrone said he had learned more in the past year from his boss than ever, on topics including running a practice, scheduling and dealing with players.

So, while Coughlin is the front office guy, it seems like Marrone leans on him for a lot of the administrative stuff and almost certainly picks his brain for scouting reports.

A lot of the local beat guys that were in Pitt yesterday were commenting on Coughlin watching the game from the press box and not being happy with the Jags play after the early lead. The comments started before it got close.
Coughlin is a micro manager type.

ETA: Agree with Wolf that even if he's a mentor he isn't the coach

So he's a real Holmgren in Creverand /CLit

PS: I will never like July 27th. It will always be the day Reggie died. I just hate this day. True Celtic fans know what I mean.

You can't get a delay of game out of a timeout and give up 3rd and 18 in the 4th quarter up 10. Future is bright, Duval.

I actually en joyed reading that. If a neutral anal yst can identify tendencies you know damn well a good coaching staff like Belichick's is going to identify those tendencies as well.

LISTEN TO ME! I AM THE ALL-KNOWING WARREN SHARP! HEED MY WORDS!

'm sure I'll have plenty more advice for the team in the 2018 Football Preview book, due out this summer. Hopefully they address the issues.

Come on. Everybody and their stepdad knows the Jags choked like crazy. That's why you don't deserve credit this time

What Jacksonville needed to do to beat New England:

Throw for close to 300 yards [check]
Rush for over 100 yards [check]
Hold Brady to less than 300 yards passing [check]
Hold the Pats to less than 50 yards rushing [check]
Don't commit any turnovers [check]
Don't miss any field goal attempts [check]
Force a timely turnover [check]
Concuss Gronk early so that he can't beat you [check]
Hope that Tom Brady's thumb injury is severe enough that he can't pick you apart in the second half and crush your soul [oof!]

Okay, Philly. I think you know what you have to do.

Don't take a delay of game penalty off a timeout with a chance to get in field goal range before half [oooooof]
Don't give up a 3rd and 18 In the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead. [OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFF]

Fixed.
