Hit the mute button (TV Commentators)

Postby D'Annunzio » 06 Nov 2007, 10:19

Talk in another topic got me to thinking about starting a topic for TV play by play guys, analysts, and pregame shows.

For me, without a doubt the best play by play guy of all time is Pat Summerall. Even the senile Pat Summerall that would get everyone's name wrong. That guy was the best.

Most people hate Madden, but he would have to be my #1 analyst. Troy Aikman is right there too.

Joe Theismann is without a doubt the worst analyst of all time. The only guy in his league is Paul McGuire.

I can't think of any play by play guys that I really hate, but I can't think of any I like either.

ESPN has the best pregame show by far. But as much as I'd hate to admit, Emmitt Smith is a disaster on that show. He'll just have to settle for just being the best running back of all time.

He's not the worst pregame/studio show guy out there, though. That would be Deion Sanders.....without question.

Again, everyone hates Berman, but he and Tom Jackson are the best in the business.

Bob Costas is a fucking genius. best in the business. NBC's pregame show is too cluttered this year but still by far better than the others.

The worst show of all time was the CBS pregame show when they had Ditka AND Glanville. Trainwreck.

Terry Bradshaw is pretty bad, too.

Emmitt sucks - Keyshawn aint so bad, he's better than the hyper Michael Irvin.

Tom Jackson is pretty cool - old school type of guy and he works well with Berman alone on the Bitz. But sometimes he comes off as a crusty old bastard who doesn't accept the young guns. He needs to loosen up just a bit, but I still like him.

As for game calling commentators - I don't mind Joe Buck/Aikman (ducking my head as someone throws a cup of Starbucks at me), but I suppose I'm biased in my like of Aikman.

The rest are OK, I don't really pay too much attention to them, but I've never been a fan of Dan Deirdork. He sounds like someones Grandpa, always in a good mood and in awe of the big names. His love of Jerry Rice was pathetic.

I won't turn off a game because of a certain commentator, but I used to love Madden/Summerall. Sunday afternoons with good football and they were always there on the NFC games. Something about that just brings back good memories.

I don't mind Berman all that much. His schtick is really old and tired, but he has an enthusiasm and love for the game that, to me at least, seems genuine, and one that not many other announcers/commentators have.

Agreed that Emmit is terrible. Hopefully the network puts him out to pasture in the offseason.

Berman has enthusiasm for Favre, Brady, and to a lesser extent the Colts and that's it.

... Leaving out the Bills and the Eagles. He loves them.

Did you guys see the beginning of NFL countdown this past Sunday. They had little snipets from the 72 Dolphins talking about being undefeated.

Griese said something along the lines of "If you climb that mountaintop, we'll welcome you to the club and move over and make room for you".... Then that blowhard Mercury Morris does his "Don't call us when you are in our town!!!! Call us when you are on our street !!!!!!"

Nice comment from Griese, but Morris fucked it up with his comments.

The Merc says that every year.

You know what, fuck it...hat's off to the 72 team for being dicks about it. If the Pats can do it, good for them. But they're not even close yet. And they still have to play us one more time. Call me when you're on my block Belicheck.

I dont like any NFL pre game yuckefests.

I love College Gameday. Very strange ESPN broadcasts this show since its good.
PS: I will never like July 27th. It will always be the day Reggie died. I just hate this day. True Celtic fans know what I mean.

Used to enjoy the Fox NFL Pre-game when JB was presiding over the proceedings but I can't take it any more and have switched to CBS. It's not that I mind Terry, Howie, and Jimmy, it's just that the show seems less focused now... I think Howie would make a good game analyst.

Some of the lesser-acclaimed play-by-play guys I like are Dick Stockton and Joel Meyers. Verne Lundquist should definitely be doing NFL games again, too.
