GOAT Discussion

GOAT Discussion

Postby babylurch » 12 Sep 2016, 07:18

Last night's discussion in the box got me thinking a bit. I am not a big fan of GOAT discussions, for a number of reasons. Most notably, there is the difficulty of comparing people from different eras, with different roles on their respective teams (assuming team sports for the moment). There is also the fundamental question of what does the best mean. Is Peyton the best because of his tremendous regular season success, or is he disqualified because of his lack of success in the playoffs?

I guess that I am more interested in a dispassionate view of the usual suspects, without the overlay of trying to prove that they were the 'best'.

For example--Tiger Woods: remarkable dominance, and an amazing willingness to keep playing hard when it must have been tempting to mail in a performance in the Greater Louisville Open. Most impressive achievement to me was his cuts made streak. I never liked Tiger, so I would watch the cut line when he wasn't playing well on the chance that the streak would end. IIRC, he went birdie, birdie a couple of times to maintain the streak and even won a couple of events where he hit the cut on the number.
Downside: reputation for pushing the rules (getting the gallery to move a boulder, standing just outside of his playing partner's line of sight when they were putting. Deadly frontrunner, couldn't come from behind.

Is he better than Nicklaus? Who gives a fuck? They didn't play with the same equipment. In any event, I preferred to watch Miller and Mickelson.

I think the golf GOAT discussion is easy.

At his height, Tiger was better than Nicklaus. Over the length of their respective careers Nicklaus is better than Tiger.

there is so much wrong with the list you can't even begin, even if you just eliminate any wrestling references.

Rickie Fowler says Tiger is hitting the ball "way by" him in practice rounds

Given how Tiger's driver has been all over the place in recent years he could mean "way by him in the right rough"
