mario, i'm watching the IPL final and a batsman hit a low screamer straight back toward the bowler, which made me wonder the following. if a batter hits the ball straight so it goes right into the opposite wicket, what's the call?

If the ball goes straight from the batsman's bat & breaks the wicket at the other end, it's not out & a dead ball (ie: the play is dead).

However, if the bowler touches it in any way on the way through, it breaks the wicket & the other batsman was not behind his crease, then the non-striker is out, given run out.

I swear to god that this is far simpler than the explanation I've given.

Everyone's having trouble figuring out what color to make the ball for test matches held at night.

How much does a cricket ball cost? Is it that much more expensive than a baseball that they can't afford to put a new one in every over or two? Do they get the ball back from the fans after every six?

Because the properties of the ball change with use - favouring quicker bowlers at the beginning & spin / seam bowlers as the innings goes on. The bowling team has the option to take a new ball after 90 overs (540 deliveries).

And, yes, if the ball goes over the fence, the fans throw it back. Even in deprived, third world hell holes like India or Nottingham.

Some of the gazillion T20 leagues have promotions where any fan catching a 6 cleanly wins big money. Kinda dumb.

No foul ground in cricket. Gotta protect the stumps.
