So, when is this waste of money going to finally tank? What has it been 8 years now? Still no fans. I apologize for the seemingly sexist remark but no one really wants to watch women play basketball....except for other women playing basketball. I'm just suprised it has lsted this long....I mean...the XFL didn't last that long...and that was worthless too....

The NBA does it to help out with public relations for the league. With all the illegitimate kids the players have out of wedlock and the sometimes troubling dometic abuse issues.. this is something they can point to as what it does thats good for women in regards to basketball. Its not there to make money, its there to make them look good.

Those 38 people in the USA who are hard core women's hoops fans (no, I'm not one of them) were better served by the now defunct ABL which put more focus on the game than the color scheme of the ball. I have nothing against fringe sports having a league that have a small but intensely loyal fan base. However the NBA views the WNBA as a marketing opportunity, not a league that should serve its core support base. For that reason alone they should fail, much like the NHL did.

Your Dudeness, did you send post to SG for a column idea? I said earlier today that I hadn't really heard anyone talking about the WNBA's failure to do anything productive. Little did I know, you had already posted about it 4 days ago.

The WNBA would have gone the way of the ABL and WUSA long ago if the NBA didn't foot the bill. I don't mind the commercials, I don't even really mind the occassional tie in (like the 2Ball event in the All-Star game). I just hate the sweet TV deal they have with ESPN that limits my sports watching options because WNBA basketball is on. Go put it on Lifetime and Oxygen, it's already got two networks.

No. I don't read SG anymore so I have no clue what's going on. I was just angry that WNBA was in stead on tv that night instead of something interesting or atleast entertaining. This was simply a vent.

Apparently Phoenix is interested in Geno Auriemma for a coaching position. He won't go.

He's just playing with UConn since the state has been fucking with his income through their new ethics rules. The highest-paid WNBA coach makes something like $300K a year, and Geno makes almost 3x that now.

Question for the Connecticut people on board: Are you actively rooting for the Sun to win the WNBA title, and if the Sun wins it all, will you play "Brass Bonanza" at the 4-car parade? Or would that be sacrilege?
I've grown so used to you somehow, Lord I'm nobody's sugar daddy now, and I'm lo-oo-onesome, I've got the lovesick blues.

I didn't even know that there was a WNBA team in Conn. And why are they called the Sun?

I'd say about 5%-10% of the people care. If they played in Hartford that number might have approached 20%, but they play at the Mohegan Sun casino (which is why they're called "the Sun" dude) in the sparsely populated southeast corner of the state. The WNBA counts on young girls to make up a large percentage of the crowd at any given game, and a lot of parents don't want to bring their kids to the casino. Add that to the fact that most everyone is at least a 45 minute drive from the casino and people just generally don't care. I think I lot of the locals were rooting for Seattle in last year's Seattle-CT WNBA final just because Sue Bird (one of UConn's most popular players ever) was on the Seattle team.
