Last night's comeback win against Memphis gives me just a little bit of hope that these guys can rally their way all the way up to a first-round NIT exit.

Attention Power 5 conference schools who don’t think UConn belongs: we have more national championships to most of you, and now we’ve proven we can cheat at a level you would envy as well. So where the fuck’s our invite!?

Was out at dinner last night and they had the USF-UCoon game on in the background (for whatever reason). Wherever they were playing (Gampel or the Civic Center) looked 1/3 full. What happened up there? Is Ollie not getting it done?

If it's AAC related I can't imagine being in the ACC would be a marked improvement. If the product on the court isn't getting it done it doesn't matter who you're playing--and if it's someone like NC State or Miami you would expect the same level of attendance.

Frank or Mags, thoughts?

Many are calling for Ollie’s head. The detractors claim that he won with Calhoun’s recruits, and that he can’t bring in the talent and consistently gets the talent he does bring in to underachieve. How much of this is Ollie and how much of this is going to the conference equivalent of Siberia in the AAC? Difficult to say definitively, but I’m entering my vote at 70% Ollie, 30% AAC.

They sold well when Villanova came to town, but then they got so thoroughly blown out that it left a bad taste in the mouths of the casual fans. There also aren’t any great rivalries anymore for UConn. They desperately need to cultivate one of those. .500 basketball in a bad conference for a school that wasn’t shy about jacking up prices when championships were coming in the door isn’t going to put fannies in the seats.

I think UConn’s pretty fucked. No major conference is going to want us until our football product gets good, and considering we’d need an improvement effort worthy of a movie script to get to merely “adequate”, I don’t see that happening. At least they’re in Hockey East, which is arguably the best collegiate hockey conference out there. That’s nice.

The demise of UConn as a college basketball powerhouse continued toady as their 26-year broadcast partner declined to renew the radio rights at the terms UConn was demanding.

The passive-aggressive press release form the radio station's ownership had this gem:

“I have the highest respect for UCONN Athletic Director David Benedict and his goals for the university,” said Entercom Sr. VP and Hartford Market Manager Phil Zachary. “Having grown up in Connecticut, there’s a special place in my heart for UCONN Basketball,” he said. “However, I couldn’t justify what they were seeking when compared to more successful partnerships Entercom enjoys with elite Power 5 institutions.

Hurtful. Spot on, but hurtful. UConn thinks it's elite. No one else does. We're the Joe Flacco of men's basketball. And we're the Canadian curling of women's basketball: truly dominant but that doesn't mean there's any money in it.

I think the Louisville thing says a lot about just how much football matters. Louisville’s vacating of wins and a national championship should be decimating. If it was about academics and integrity this would have people saying “man, they should’ve taken UConn instead of Louisville when they were between those two”. However, I haven’t heard a single person say that, even in CT. Why? Because Louisville was still the right choice for football, and that’s where the money is. Who cares about the prostitutes and the fraud and the crimey-wimey stuff? The Power Five should really break off from the NCAA and say that they don’t give a shit about academics. It would be a refreshing burst of honesty. And I don’t say that suggesting that UConn is somehow morally superior. They’re not. They’d nuke a sparsely-populated town in one of the northern corners of the state to join that Power Five organization if they did secede.

The bold is so true. I remember in the last round of conference expansion it was reported that both UConn and Duke made more money from football than basketball. Football is king.
