As the 2010 season winds down for "Red Sox Nation" :gay: , many Sox fans will take comfort in the fact that so many injuries were the cause of missing the playoffs... and lets be honest they did have a huge impact. But once you reach this level of talent (and payroll) there are no excuses, the season is either a success or it isn't. Ultimately, the Yankees and Rays have better teams this season and injuries aside, the pitching didn't hold up to what many experts thought would be the difference.

My take on the plus and minuses:

+'s
Jon Lester is a stud, but you already knew that.
Clay Bucholz has a chance to be a legitimate top of the rotation starter for years to come. I know there was talk of trading Bucholz instead of Justin Masterson last year, but they made the right decision to keep Clay.
Ryan Kalish is a really good young player, you can never have too many of them.
Daniel Bard has shown signs of being ready to be "the man" and take over as the closer (see more on this below)
Adrian Beltre had a monster season, hopefully they resign him.

-'s
Papelbon is DUN in Boston... notice I didn't say he's done as a closer but I don't think it will be in Fenway. He cost himself some money with his mediocre performance this season.
John Lackey has been a disapointment (obviously) and might not be able to function in the fish bowl of Boston media.
Victor Martinez is a great hitter but it's not good if I could steal a base on a major league catcher. I watched a decent number of games this season and don't remember a Sox catcher throwing a runner out trying to steal. Embarassing.
JD Drew. Please go away.
Tim Wakefield should retire. There's no shame, he's been a great "team guy" but the time has come.

Overall a meh to meh + season as a Sox fan, I enjoyed the games. It was my first year of high def and NESN does a nice job. Don Orsillo and Jery Remy are pretty entertaining and Heidi Watney is hot as hell, I'd bang her even if she has been used up by Tek.
Ballz: So, I fucking got a BJ for $250 total, and wore a rubber. It sucked, I couldnt even feel it, so i jeckyled onto her tits. She was cute. Not even that far out of my league, it was a waste of $250

That Beltre decision should be interesting. He carried the offense for most of the year. However, contract year, going to want a big deal, and most importantly as Theny would tell you, not white.

There isn't much free agent help available though, so I'd lean towards paying him.

Hey, look at the bright side... you still have four years for Lackey to make good on his 5/$82.5MM and four years for Beckett to make good on his 4/$68MM extension. No worries.

I think you offer something fair but let someone stupid overpay for Beltre. Next, you give Ellspussy, Paps, and Lars Ulrich Anderson for A-Gon. Theo usually gets the players he has a raging stinger for, so maybe throw Dice in there too. His nip ass delivery will be good for 13-16 wins in the NL West.

It doesn't look great for next year, especially with those two overrated dipshits Lackey and Beckett. But to be in it this late with half your team gone isn't the worst season I've seen.

As an Indians fan I know this is true. Masterson has shown some improvement, but I doubt he will be as good as Bucholz as a starting pitcher.

I'm split on these two. I'm optimistic about Beckett and pessimistic about Lackey. Beckett has performed with the spotlight shining bright before, and I think the odds are good that he will again. Plus, if you're going to overpay for someone it may has well be someone who brought a championship to town before. I don't see the Sox getting value out of the Lackey signing. Sure, I think he could be better than he was this year, but when you make that kind of money that's not enough to cut it. If anyone wanted to wager about Lackey still being in a Sox uniform when this contract expires, I'd bet a lot of money he won't be. I put the over/under on the amount of money the Sox eat on his remaining contract at 62.5%.

I do. Two years before he walks, Padres ask for a shitload. Now basically they have half a year to decide on a package because he's out of there. They'll get a leadoff hitter, an inexpensive starter, a potential power first baseman under their control, and a good closer they could flip if they suck by next July 31st.

I think the Sox need this guy after fucking up on Texeira and will offer anyone but Buchholz and Casey Kelley to get him.

I wouldn't say the Sox "fucked up" on Teixeira. They offered 8/$160MM. When Teixeira wouldn't sign after the Sox flew out to meet him I think it was clear that the Yankees were planning on adding $10MM to any offer Boston put on the table.

I just disagree with you. Papelbon is worthless to the Padres do to both price and the fact they already have Heath Bell (and could flip him), Ellsbury is entering the tail end of his cost-controlled years and Anderson's prospect star has dimmed quite substantially in the past two seasons. If the Padres flip Adrian to the Red Sox, I'm of the belief that it'll cost a ton more in the realm of top prospects and/or guys with under 2 years service time.
