So the Red Sox are going to pay 10 million to Beltre PLUS 9 million to the Rangers towards Mike Lowell's salary? Baseball is AWESOME

Beltre for 10 million is absurd. Bad move.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Look up his home/road splits. Safeco was the worst possible stadium for him to play in. He should be very well-suited to Fenway, though, and he's a solid defender.

the opportunity cost of knowing how to preheat an oven is pretty puny compared to anything else

Well, he's essentially a defensive specialist at this point. In years past, his stellar defense play was matched with decent offensive production. Offensively, he was extremely poor last deason almost offsetting his defensive ability. It's a big gamble to say he'll bounce back and give you 10 million in production sum total.

We don't know. Unlike the yankees, the sox do have a budget. I think they're done shopping at this point. Beltre could be fine if he bounces back offensivley. Park independent looks show just how awful he was last season. Will be fun to watch him play third though.

This year. I would imagine that they'll be throwing around a lot of cash next year.

They just need to get Beltre back on the juice and he'll be fine. Papi should be mainlining hgh again all winter too....it'll be all good, NATION. No worries.

His offensive production was way way off last year, but he was battling through some injuries all year and it doesn't appear to be a long-term trend. At one year for $9mil it's a pretty minimal investment.

This article does a pretty good job summarizing the argument in favour of Beltre.

actually the Yankees do have a budget, which is why they haven't signed Damon, despite the hole in LF

Technically the Lowell deal fell through, but they're sure to deal him before the season, in which case they could end up paying even more of his salary to play elsewhere. Whatta sport! #-o

Plus they've got to save that money for when Pujols and Mauer hit the market.

He also lost a testicle last season. Everyone can say what they will, but Theo has really cornered the market on one-nutted third basemen.

It's a smart move defensively, because really, who wants to go to third base with a guy with one nut?

In other news, the Yankees just signed
