And tackles necessarily equates to how good you are? I guess Ron McKinnon is going to the Hall of Fame then.

Of course not, but still....

Besides, don't the players decide who make the Pro Bowl?

I think it's some kind of convoluted system now, with coaches, players and fans all having some kind of percentage say. Hey, I ain't saying that Zach isn't a Hall of Famer, but his reputation seems to be outshining his play the last few years. And he wasn't a better player than James Farrior last year, tthat's for sure.

Who the hell is James Farrior???? :D

Zach seemed like he was sliding earlier in the year, but he's been playing extremely well the last 3 weeks or so.

I think Ray Lewis may be a better example of what you're trying to say.

Or maybe Seau, who was the man for a while, but was making Pro Bowls way past his prime, basically because of rep

Jesus fucking Christ. Alex Gonzalez was average at best. Jeter was better. The guy who really got fucked over was Michael Young. He was far and away the best defensive short stop this season.

Okay, i've tried to stay out of the whole Gold Glove Jeter/Gonzalez/Young discussion because a) the Gold Gloves are a sham and b) I don't really care that much. But to say that Alex Gonzalez was "average at best"... ONTB, did you watch Gonzalez this year? Say what you will about him, gold glove or no gold glove, Alex Gonzalez was an excellent defensive shortstop this year.

What #'s are telling you he was average at best?

Maybe its been said before but I'll say it again.

Michael Young is possibly the most underrated player in the Major Leagues.

4 straight years of .300+ average and 200+ hits in addition to Gold Glove caliber glove work.

I saw probably 100 to 110 Red Sox games. And yeah, Alex Gonzalez was better than Renteria, but he's range and arm weren't near Jeter (25 or 30 Yankees games), and Jeter wasn't near Young who was insane at SS this year (15 or so Rangers games). And of course I can bring the stats if needed.

ETA: stats

BP defensive rate (100 is average)
Gonzalez 96
Jeter 106
Young 115

Defensive win shares
Gonzalez 5.9
Jeter 4.6
Young 7.7

Range factor
Gonzalez 4.36
Jeter 4.14
Young 4.86

zone rate
Gonzalez .836
Jeter .810
Young .836

In total, it appears Gonzalez bested Jeter-- although baseball prospectus doesn't think so. And Young should have won the award or Uribe.

I dont disagree with young and mentioned him as one of several shortstops that were better than Jeter in the yankees thread. There is no way Jeter is better than gonzo with the glove. You can post weird stats all you want , I still think you are insane
