The Sports Guy Intern Contest

Postby dirknowitzki1 » 22 Jul 2015, 20:01

Anybody remember the Intern Contest he ran back in like 2005? This kinda encapsulates what Bill Simmons is such an impactful sports writer through an experience with the Intern Contest that BS ran back in the day. Really it's about discovering and growing up with Bill Simmons and how he became the voice of this sports generation.

without reading the article, I hope this is sarcasm. If Bill Simmons is the voice of a generation, then that generation should grow the fuck up.

Agree, Simmons is my favorite sports writer and it's gonna be great seeing him on HBO without ESPN's shackles holding him back.

Nah, it's not because he talks about the Patriots and Celtics in 10,000 word Boston stroke sessions. It's because of the impact he's had on the sports media landscape. He's a dude that a lot of people grew up reading and influenced heavily. He took his influence at ESPN and turned it into a lot of great stuff that in turn empowered other very talented people.

That's basically the point the article is making

"sports" ias a bit of a misnomer... "sport", maybe?

also, if he influenced a lot of people with his writing, i don't want those peeps to grow up, I want them to read other (read: more talented) writers. FOH

Well it never contends he's the best writer. But the lateral influences are undeniable.

The fact that we are communicating on a Bill Simmons message board speaks volumes to that lol

does that not make it worse? I mean, I get the everyday man vibe, but if he isn't even good at his fucking job, which consists of just typing incoherent thoughts in a word.doc, then stop defending him. He was good, he sucks, and yes I am on a messageboard with his pen name, which I originally joined to bash his ass, but I never expected that there would be people on here defending his legacy at least 7 years after the fact. Come on, I'm German, are you going to discredit Dirkules' name any more to defend some MAWG who made a whole bunch of cash by living in a city with both a lot of sports and a steady internet connection? 20$ says the "Sports Guy" would not even have cracked the deadspin blacks ten years later. So get your damn head out of your ass, some guy who had a whole ARTICLE looking for goddamn INTERNS to mine them for goddamn PERSONALITY TRAITS and somesuch is neither a good person nor a creative writer. I don't even know you and I sure shooting don't want to be a dick to you, but you had to at least have a feeling that bringin up some old columd would lead to one of either "Simmons sucks" or "Simmons was good, but now he sucks", so FFS don't come on here and make his case. He sucks BOLD FONT PERIOD

We're communicating about it because you came on here to post an article; which while meant to be complimentary, inadvertently nailed exactly why Simmons and his fans suck:

And in the end, he’s done that by making sports accessible and entertaining to people like me.

In other words, the author doesn't actually like sports in and of themselves, but wants to make snarky comments about it to fit in, so he read this turd's writing and repackages his thoughts to pass off confidence as expertise; If real life is a guide, he will then get all huffy and indignant when someone with actual sports knowledge tries to argue with him;

To be fair, I used to enjoy Simmons' writing a lot, but eventually I reached an age where I had to earn money to pay for stuff, interacted with real life black people, and started questioning whether this bozo actually knew a goddamn thing he was going on about; I cannot speak to whether the author's continued high regard for this insufferable moron has survived the first two of these conditions, but I suggest that he apply the third;

Yes, Andy Greenwald and Rembert Browne are a testament to the fact that a generation of self-obsessed losers aspired to one day engage in simple-minded conversations with themselves on a major website; Good for him, the internet and the world are worse for him having ever existed;
