I've worked for a telecom company since 1990 so I was pretty familiar with Usenet, FTP and even web browsing pre-Netscape with Mosaic(circa 1994).

im with you dunk. i used to hang out on BBS's a lot when i was younger. (starting in the early nineties...i really liked the movie wargames so i got into them as soon as i could convince my parents i needed a modem)

i "acquired" my first email account in 1992 when a hacker friend of mine from a BBS found a bunch of under-used email accounts in hong kong and gave me one to fuck around with.

from there i was on Usenet, and then to IRC (the OG irc with no graphic bullshiat).

my high school had internet in 1995, and OXY had t1 lines in our dorm rooms so i was good to go from '96 until now.

.

So bacon stole his first e-mail address from someone from Hong Kong. I guess that makes sense - during the Rodney King riots, I'm assuming?

I was on my first BBS in 1988 and was an "assistant SysOp". Nothing made the high school ladies melt quite like saying "I have SysOp privileges and unlimited downloads" back in 1988.

Is that the 1988 version of moderator? Did all of your type appear in Green?

oh i remember IRC. Finding that was awesome. I think i ran mIRC all day while i was in school downloading music and stuff (which i had to do, since i was running a 28.8 modem and it took 3 hours to download a 4 minute song).

Today's Wall Street Journal online has an article about YouTube and copyright infringement (subscription required) and how Simmons' June column is now dated because most of the YouTube videos he linked to have been pulled down. Selected highlights:

Jason Fry, WSJ wrote:I figured some of them would get pulled," Mr. Simmons says via email, adding that "I was going to do a follow-up column with reader suggestions but decided against it. ? I would actually use You Tube clips all the time to accentuate points in columns or give background to a play or game I was writing about, but I think it's frustrating to readers to click on those links three hours after the column has gone up and the clip has already been pulled."

Jason Fry, WSJ wrote:(For his part, Mr. Simmons says that he loves YouTube, but adds that "I don't see how You Tube exists. I really don't. It reminds me of Napster in that something that's too good to be true probably is.")

It's an interesting quick read if you know someone with WSJ Online access. It's from a column that's not in the print edition.

that sucks. I tried to check out the Borat/Martha Stewart appearance on the Tonight Show but those assholes at NBC had them taken down.

I would imagine that's why he stated its a good read if you know someone with access to WSJ online.

I don't know anyone who has WSJ. They should make it free like every other newspaper out there. Advertisements could probably get them the same amount of revenue as member subscriptions.

They've always charged, right from the beginning. And that's why they're one of the few online outlets who thrive, because they stuck the screws to people immediately. Contrast that with the NY Times, which tried to get people (like me) to pay with its Select option. I stopped reading it online, and so did a lot of people. It's like NetZero. If ya tell me the shit's free, don't tell me in a year that it's $9.99. But, hey, if ya charge me from the get go, I'll go along with paying forever, and even accept price hikes. I'm a dumb consumer like that.
